not enough return for 18 years....

True. So for £5k what are better options?

My thoughts are for a trust fund for little one to buy her first car with and pay college fees, etc. So 18 years is about right, but if there's better opportunities out there I'm all ears.

This came at me from two different directions over the last couple of days, investing in Brazilian Teak.
12-14% returns, £5k min investment for £56k returned over 18 years, etc.

So... anyone looked into this kind of thing before? What are your thoughts?

Hi Dan , havent invested in Forestation as such before, more de-forestation, tho one of our GS owners (Peter) owns and manages a forest Tree farm up here , in around Towcester,
Years ago i used to buy a lot of Teak /Mahogany and hardwoods direct from Laos and Thailand for the manufacture of fireplace surrounds in Thailand which i then imported into the uK, when you see the after affects of de-forestation without management its complete devastation ,its frightening what we have done or allowed to happen in the sole purpose of greed , im not the greenest of people, far from it owning 2 massers i guess , but now i wouldn't invest in anything that had a glogal harming and that wasn't managed properly and at the very least benefitted the community from which the resource was being taken ,

Having just browsed through their broshure , no where does it state that the local community are benefitting , no pictures / information on how its cleared , seems the investement is really in the hands of the rental company as to whether they manage to make a profit to be shared out to the investors , sound good on paper , as these things that are long distant investments , hard to keep track of, and companies open close/get taken over so quickly nowdays , it wouldn't be for me , the profits quoted as expected looking enticing , its a case of buyer beware , do what homework you can before you bite the bullet , maybe worth a punt as a long term investment for the nippers 18th birthday

£56K will be no where near enough for Uni fees in 18 years Dan , i went through similar with my two boys altho didn't give it any thought untill they were around 12 years old , so i took out a 5 year endowment for each , for what ever reason my eldest didn't go down the uni road after his A's and chose to go in IT , my youngest is going though it at the moment at Cambridge , A local Specsavers Franchise owner has sponsored him right the way through his studying so ive been lucky,

When i took out the endowments they were for £25K each , 4 years at Cambridge would have seen him £45K in debt , so what with present Uni increases its a daunting prospect to try and cater for , but some investment is better than none

My Guess is £5K invested this time of year in Xmas Trees and wrapping paper would see you around 300% profit , multiply that by 18 and you'll have a tidy sum , but probably severely frost bitten

I can't see any mention of accreditation? FSC PEFC? If the plantation isn't acredited, they won't be able to sell their timber to any reputable converter.

RUN A MILE.

I've only just seen this thread - I have a lot of experience doing due diligence on non-regulated alternative investments particularly over the last 7 years. Some are good, some are bad. I've yet to invest any client funds in Trees, there has been a significant flaw in every project I've been presented with so far. I could type for hours on it.

Instead I shall put the kids to bed, pour a glass of wine and then give you a couple of pointers so as not to send the world to sleep early ;o)

My job is making wallpaper, so we buy base paper, lots of it, hundreds of tonnes a year. We are required (by an increasingly eco-aware marketplace) to conform to FSC and PEFC. FSC is now widely marketed. It's on everything from toilet roll to flatpack furniture (and the box it comes in). PEFC is a European standard designed for co-operative foresters, mainly in Scandanavia. Both require that we be audited and that we show and maintain an un-interrupted record all the way back to the forest. If asked (which we are by the auditors), we could take a roll of wallpaper and tell you the tree that supplied the wood pulp. The forest itself cannot be accredited unless it demonstrates sustained forestry management. We could not sell our wallpapers if we did not conform to these market-driven systems of oversight.

Teak obviously isn't a wood pulp timber grade, but it is a furniture grade. None of the high-street or internet retailers would touch any product made from lumber supplied by an un-audited supplier. This is how it works, it's market driven.

Oh and you cannot demonstrate managed positive impact forestry practice in 18 years.

thought that was your speciality Andy, destroy it yourself, heard you were handy in the bedroom, hence good at putting up wall paper.
