Mate took a photo of one on its nest on a telegraph pole in Latvia. They’re very rare in this country but have nested in Lakenheath Fen, not far from Mildenhall but what I find strange is they’re sighted and nest in 2 places that have serious amounts of noise from the jets from the USAF bases at Mildenhall and Lakenheath.

spot on. Gambia a good winter destination to top up vitamins, lovely people and lots of photography options lol
love east africa 1st though, we generally go there late summer early autumn to catch the migration at the mara river. However, we have not been for 3 years with covid and not looking likely anytime soon unless they improve the flight times, only direct return flights we were being quotes for September were 2 in the morning!

Round my way in the last 25 years or so the house martin has been in steady decline but not the case in Portugal it seems, my mate sent me this photo whilst he’s on holiday there.
They’ve finally realised it’s too cold here.

Wonderful to see that. They don’t have enough insects to feed on in Northern Europe nowadays. I think If I was flapping all the way from South Africa, I’d probably stop at Portugal, too!

Well they must have left early this year, our autumn is unusually wet and cold this year. I don’t see a lot of Storks here but we do get the Blue Crane which is a sight to behold - and SA’s National bird.

Båstards. Ruining a perfectly good arch with their mud and spit.

Not a twitcher and not seen any Storks but yesterday had a Buzzard on the ground in the garden. The young Lab saw his chance any raced towards it only to see it majestically rise from the ground just as he got in range.
