Another Alpina fan here. Had my B6S for about 5 years now. This was the second one I have had and they are great cars for the road. This one is only 1 of 3 in the UK so rather rare. Certainly brings a lot of smiles per miles.
That is one very rare Alpina. Love it.

Yesterday at the petrol station I go to pay for fueling up the chap at the counter says

Excuse me sir... "Do you realise you just put diesel in your M5, I suggest you call your recovery services as if you drive away you are going to ruin your car"

I appreciate the concern but it is slightly patronising as it is a diesel Alpina. Which was roughly my reply to the duty manager at the Shell petrol station who immediately became p!ssed off - great customer service lol!

At least they tried to be kind... most would just laugh at the customer esp if they were then told to push it away from the pump to allow others to use it.

I am sure you are correct and I was polite in my response (although I felt patronised by their tone)

Maybe he didn't like the fact that it was a diesel Alpina and not a M5?

In 2015 I traded in my SL320 at Sytner Nottingham to buy the QP. Whilst we were waiting to sort out the deal I suggested my wife go to the Alpina display on the mezzanine floor to look at a new 3 series. There were a few guys in suits on the stand. When she came back she said it was £68k and any way she didn't like the colour (the single most important thing when she wants a car). The sales guys we were with were very amused and offered to bring over the men in suits who were the owners of Alpina to have a chat and then explained she could have any colour she liked eg to match her lipstick

I was disappointed by the E34 M5. Love the looks, especially the later model, but the drive was a bit... flat.

The Alpina B10 Biturbo on the other hand was amazing. I know of one for sale at the mo, drop me a PM if serious. It’s around €50k iirc, and it’s not the Motorhub car
I would love to get the B10 but that ship might have sailed now. in these post-divorce times the "fun fund" is harder to find.

I understand that.
Nevertheless, if for pR0nographic reasons if nothing else...

Final price: € 56,990

Latest chapter of Alpina ownership... I was backing into a space and I could hear a cracking noise from behind the steering wheel then an airbag warning light came up... Following that all of the steering wheel buttons and horn stopped working

Failed clock spring... Dropped it off to Marshalls and got it back the next day repaired under BMW warranty.

The steering feels different now with the new clock spring. Sport mode is quite a lot heavier and in other modes it feels like it is trying to centre a lot more aggressively - not sure I like it as it feels a bit like an arcade game but I'm sure that I will adjust in no time.

That sounds odd. Clock'springs' are very weak, or it would be harder to turn the wheel one way (winding it up) then the other (unwinding it).....

Replacing one (IMHO) should have zero impact to steering feel. I'd be a bit surprised if you heard it crack as well. It's not exactly under a huge amount of tension. In fact it's not really a spring...

At least that's my understanding. As ever, I reserve the right to talk utter rubbish

What Rockits said. The clock spring can’t have changed that. But they might have messed with the settings. You could change steering assistance on my M3 and set it up in the “M” setting too. The B5 might be the same.

It would not have been the spring that failed but rather the electrical ribbon inside gets dislodged and then begins to get chewed up every time you turn the wheel... Eventually it will lunch the loom entirely

Skip ahead to 8mins to avoid the long explanation.

I did hear a ticking noise a few moments before the crack so the loom must have failed quickly as I was turning between full lock to park...

Should have bought a Maserati. BMW's are far too unreliable clearly.

I agree to some extent... BMWs are not known for their reliability particularly when they get old and have lots of miles.

My old E46 330i cost more per mile in engine oil than fuel.

Ahh, yes. But that should mean it's easier to turn now the cable's not getting mashed....

Now given your last experience are you sure he hasn't left his torch in there?
Sounds to me, if the settings are all OK that they have mucked it up again.

I'll check if the part they changed is Alpina specific or not... It is the only thing they could have f'ed up
