Me and my better half are off to the above in a few weeks to take in the F1 and then have a few days in Dubai afterwards.

Aside from the usual stuff (tall buildings, dinner on the creek, souks etc.) has anyone got any recommendations of sights to see or unusual things to do in either city please? Dune buggy rides are out!

Thanks,

Go and have a meal with some desert farmers (Bedouins) and experience different cultures, dune bashing, sky diving, shopping, skiing, cinemas, Burj fountains and just generally drinking and enjoying the warmer weather. Now is a fantastic time to visit!

Skiing at The Mall of the Emirates in Dubai?

Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi is ok, but probably not worth the effort unless you really fancy it.

The Gold Souk in Dera, at the north part of Dubai, is quite fun - go along later in the evening and it comes to life. From memory, it opens late afternoon. You can buy good quality replica stuff, and also pi55-poor quality replica stuff, but the haggling is always fun.

Take a trip out to the Atlantis Hotel on the Palm and admire its ostentatious silliness.

Have a walk along the road at Jumeirah Beach, It's a popular place for supercars to get stuck in traffic, so good car spotting of parked and fairly motionless cars. Wavebreakers Bar at the Hilton Jumeirah Beach is a nice place for a beer on the beach as well.

If you like a good steak, then Hunters at The Westin is superb. I always make a point of visiting and plan to do so next week when I have a few days in Dubai.

Nice waterpark at the Atlantis if that's your thing, we went a Cpl of years ago with the two little ones (not so relaxing break) ill be a few weeks behind you as off to Dubai with my better half beginning of Dec, weather is ideal as Phil said.
Years back we did some evening camel ride with a meal etc which was a nice experience.
FWIW to anyone, don't bother staying at the Atlantis, good for a day trip but the fanciness stops at the rooms, there very grubby also. oh and a beer in a plastic glass by the pool will set you back £10!!

Get out into the real UAE as well as the usual places. To see the real desert is something else.

Find a bar, go in and stay there. Personally, I can’t stand the sandpit and the sun will boil the brains in your head. You couldn’t get me there at gunpoint.

Couldn’t get most of Crab Air to stay anywhere that was warm and sunny - the lack of hotels was an issue.

Check out the Louvre Abu Dhabi that opened earlier this year - I'm slightly biased but check out the awesome feat of engineering!

Thanks - standing on the crown of the roof during construction was quite an experience in itself. Amazing when you consider its only supported at 4 points.

Absolutely. No point in being uncomfortable whilst serving your country, and anyone who does didn’t work hard enough at school. :D:D

Interesting. One of the companies I consult for has just done some funky video mapping onto the building for an event. It’s a cool building, top work.

Did they ever fix those helicopters that couldn’t fly in the dark - or was that a “we can’t get the pilot out the hotel at night”

Lol

Approved?

No problem, we were going anyway!

Don’t be late next time!

Ive no idea but, FYI, chopper pukes sleep in tents, it’s the multi-engine boys that sleep in good hotels. :D

Public - actually, clearly I didn’t pay attention.

You came - you left, quickly

I wasn’t late - It was your lot

I never knew that (about hotels) but then wokka wokka’s were like buses

We are living in Dubai most of the time and the weather is lovely now, not too hot.
We live by the Marina which is a lovely district.
Depends what you want to do / see when you’re here, but a lot has already been written about above.
Shopping is a massive pass time although it’s not cheap. There are so many wonderful restaurants many with exceptional views, take your pick.
The beach is wonderful and very liberal!
Hope you have lots of fun what ever you do

Are you a structural engineer? Did you work on it??

Hi Hoyin - More mechanically biased. We share a common acquaintance Matthew Birchall I believe?
