AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat and refers to its construction, it's nothing to do with being stop-start as some people seem to think above.

Basically, rather than acid sloshing around between the lead plates, it's held in a series of thin fibreglass mat and lead sandwiches.

FYI gel batteries are similar to the old acid one but silica (sand) is used to thicken the acid electrolyte.

The VRLA stands for Valve Regulated Lead Acid, which means that it has a valve to vent of the hydrogen when charging. Hence the clear plastic tube...

Lesson over, carry on...

They are known as start / stop because they are used in this application for cars, mainly due to being more resilient to deep cycling which happens when they have to start the engine over and over.

Some sellers will also describe gel batteries as stop / start despite them being less resilient that AGM.

All three are valve regulated as some hydrolysis occurs when being charged.
