My GTS has Alcantara seat inserts and a worn out Alcantara steering wheel, this thread made me go looking into exactly what Alcantara is? I actually thought I had some special Italian suade leather inserts but it appears Alcantara is entirely man made. So why would you ship out leather for a man made material ?

I think it's lighter than suede/leather, and hard wearing, starting it's life as a racing material.

It feels nice and sporty to grip on a new steering wheel.
Looks nice and feels warm and comfy/grippy on seats
Looks **** when its worn on a steering wheel, but can easily be retrimmed.

Have you tried reviving your alcantara steering wheel? I thought mine was finished when I got it, it was flat and shiny but with some warm soapy water and gently rubbing to dry it out, repeated 6 or so times it came up very well. Alcantara is extremely hard wearing & long lasting so it may be worth you giving this a try

Maserati use it as an upgrade, as do many other manufacturers, so I'm sure there must be advantages other than looking fantastic!!!!

It's not that I don't like it (I love my seat inserts and will try and revive my steering wheel) and I can certainly understand dooming the headlining - my question was specific to why take out leather to put in something that is not leather -
(Apart from looks) -

As with everything. Personal preference. It's a paid option so is desirable. All personal preference.
Depends on if you want the sports/car race feel or more grand tourer.

I find that it is cooler in summer(no sweaty leather seats) warmer in winter, you don't tend to slide around on it as much and for the steering wheel better grip, also too much leather can be a bit overpowering when it gets old and shiny!! These are my personal preferences, I also think it gives the interior a more modern sporty appearance.

I agree with that statement in it's entirety - well put!
