A couple of issues on my 2002 Spyder

Hi all,

I purchased a nice 52 plate Spyder about a month back privately, for a good price, however, I have had to pay almost £1k on tyres, annual service and a leaking CC pipe, but now I have a couple more issues, beginning to realise why they are so cheap to buy!...

Issue 1: have the ASR / MSP light came on intermittently, now almost all the time. Diagnosed in Giallo when serviced as the front right wheel sensor, which being part of the bearing is £534 :(. I have read on some forums if you buy the later blue wire ver - £359, you can use a resistor to bring the resistance down to the same as the black wire. Anyone tried this?.

Issue 2: Had the aircon regassed but it's still warm, which Giallo's point probably to the Climate Control unit. Not 100% sure, as it all functions except for throwing out cold climate air after being regassed. There's a slight "hiss/whine possibly?" when the Aircon is on, if I press Econ it goes so it may be something else - perhaps a leak?

Issue 3. Not so much an issue per say, but the brakes are pretty bad I feel for this car. Thinking of Brembo vented only equivalents from brakeparts.co.uk for £96 each, a set of EBC Yellow or Redstuff? and Goodridge stainless hoses, which I hope will sharpen up the brakes for around £400.

The sensor is the most pressing issue, as it feels like the ECU is retarding the ignition when the ABS/ASR error comes on, anyone have any suggestions on lower cost for the bearing and how difficult would it be to fit if I had a bearing puller?

Other than the above, a lovely car, sounds amazing and is a pleasure to drive, but blimey it isn't half expensive to maintain!.

Thanks all,
David.

Hi there ,lovely car and hang in there they can try the best of us but when it's all working for that brief moment its a joy and you will never get tied of pleasent passing comments.

Sorry but carnt be of much help you could try the reset procedure for your aircon problem theres a guide on here some where but could be a compressor problem of condensor . I am sure you are aware that the econ button stands for economy and not aircon ,people have been caught out by this before .

Ref brakes . there has recently been a brake discs group buy front and backs by a reputable company ,for aprox £220 for All 4 ,these are made to a higher spec than the original parts ,try Private message Maf as he has organised it .

I run these with mintex pads and find them very good .

Any way enjoy your new toy !

Any competent dealer / aircon people should be able to find any leak.

Lovely looking car, though

The sensor is an integral part of the hub and cannot be replaced, even with a puller / press.
When the ASR light comes on it means the wheels are slipping and then it cuts the engine power.
Are you sure this is not what you are experiencing?

issue 2
- did they put any dye in the regas which should then be easy to see with UV light

- you could also try a aircon reset - hold both recir and aircon buttons and switch ign on, keep buttons pressed until the lights stop flashing.

Hmmm, it is a new car to me so maybe, but I have put new tyres on the rear and in the last couple of days the ASR and ABS / brake symbol has stayed on from when starting to turning off the engine and it's been running in this "engine power cut" mode. I can sometimes reset the lights by turning the car off and on again and the power is then full wack, but it seems to be less often now than what it was when the issue started.

On the MSR/ABS light issue, have you been running the car in the wet? I had a problem with my GS where the MSR/ABS light would come on in the wet. I tracked it down to a perished rubber on the connector where the wheel sensor cable connects to the main wiring, which was letting water in. Since sorting this I've not had any lights at all. Worth a look.
Nice looking car you've got there, lovely colour.

Hi,

Hopefully you have nailed it fir me there!.

The car has Sat in a garage worth very little use for 2 years and the brakes needed a good clean, a service etc, these lights have been on intermittently, but usually a turn off and on of ignition sorts it for a little while.

I drove back from Giallo about 1.5 hours last week when it was tipping it down with rain and nothing I could do would take the lights off, so it could be something like this. I'll take the wheel and disc off this weekend and have a good look around at the wires, measuring the resistance. The bearing is quiet, so hopefully it is fixable through the wires somehow.

Thanks!

Let's hope that's what it is then. To be clear, the connector I am talking about is the one at the car end of the cable connected to the bearing, not the sensor end. It will be under the wheel arch and doesn't need you to take the disc off. The rubber was totally perished and had big holes in it. As a temporary fix I just cut a length of cycle inner tube and slid it over the connector then cable tied each end. Job done! I need to find a permanent fix so any suggestions are welcome!
