A Clutch Question Before Taking the Plunge

Hi All
Glad I stumbled upon the SM Forum. I've learned a lot already from checking out some of the threads.
I'm thinking very seriously about acquiring a QP to replace my 911 - a sign of age or maturity?
I have one in mind - it's a Duo Select - and I get the impression that clutch wear is potentially an issue, and a new clutch is expensive.
A few posts point out that their clutch is XX% worn. Is this something that is monitored by the car's software so I can pose the question to the seller?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Saltire and welcome. You can feel the clutch slipping before it dies (just like the manual gearboxes), or you can see that sometimes gears do not engage, after pressing the paddle.

Only with an SD2/3 tester (the official obd equipment for Maserati) you'll be able to diagnose the % wear. BUT, it rarely tells the truth, cause it has to be reset every time someone replaces the clutch and resets all the paramentres.

So, the SD helps to have a look, but the real diagnose is while you drive the car and see how 1st engages and if it slips on a full throttle 3rd from 40-150km.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, I opted for a QP last year, mine had a new clutch when i bought it at 40k but by all accounts could have gone a lot further. Cost to replace at an Indie is approx £1,800 to £2,000. I previously had a 3200 auto, & prefer the "direct" feel of the F1 gearbox. It was reintroduced on the later GT coupes with a name change to MC shift.
Downsides , have to be ' smooth' with it in town.
Positives- Shove in the back during upchanges in sport mode, & the glorious auto blip on down changes... What more can I say??
Cheers Dave

As ever just make sure you spend £250 to get an indie inspection....will pay dividends as they expensive to maintain.Let us know how the search goes !

I had a new clutch in my QP recently and so can confirm £2k is a good estimate for a replacement including flywheel and bearing. Over the lifetime of the new clutch (35000 miles maybe) so 4 years driving in my case, I don't think this is too bad.

Indeed Blox.......the newer clutches fitted to 4200/GS seem to be a big improvement, effectively taking away the fear of a 20K clutch change.......as long as you don't auto mode it!
