8 weeks in - thoughts and feelings on the GTS

I thought that after 8 weeks of ownership of my 4.7 Granturismo S MC shift I thought I would share my experience so far. I know when I've been lurking on forums wanting a car I wonder what the real life experience is like!

It was quite a long journey to get to finally buying one, mainly because I am so fussy, and once I'd seen a few cars with a wide range of specs I was unsure what to go with. I started the journey looking at all sorts and tried a 4.2 and 4.7 both ZF and MCShift. I absolutely loved all of them but for me, once I drove an MC Shift I felt it was the car for me as it was to be an irregular fair weather daily. I was also fixed on getting a white one (maybe it was the car at the top of this forum every time I signed in!).

Finally struck a deal on a 2010 2 owner, 34k miles car just before Christmas so 8 weeks later here I am writing this.

The first thing which struck me was the build quality of the car. It is SO much better than I had expected it to be. It doesn't squeak, it doesn't rattle, it doesn't leak and it's comfortable!

The first time I put the whole family in I knew how usable this car is. My kids are small, one is three and the other 6, and they both fit beautifully with their seats in the back.

It's no real surprise we all fit so well, because it's a HUGE car! You really feel how big it is when parking it but it gives the car huge presence.

Of course the sound is just intoxicating, the drive is superb and I cannot get enough of just being in it. It manages to have a wonderful sense of occasion whilst being so useable.

The biggest concern I had when buying the car (and I know it divides opinion) is the MC Shift. I know the 'right choice' is the ZF. It's smoother, doesn't require maintenance etc etc but the gearbox to me brings the whole car together. After a few hundred miles, I'd started to understand how the gearbox works better and connect with it. I'm mechanically minded and have always been very mechanically sympathetic so always thinking about the way it works I feel helps with the way it operates.

The way it changes gear in MCShift mode under full throttle is absolutely incredible. It's just brilliant! The downchanges in Sport mode are awesome!

Speaking of which, the fact it's quiet as a mouse (almost) in normal mode and then at the touch of a button it sounds like it has a sports exhaust is brilliant.

Downsides? Nothing really. Stereo (Bose) is great, even if the infotainment is backwards!

Very much looking forward to many adventures ahead. If you are thinking of getting one, do it. It's way better than I expected (and I expected a lot!!)

I need to get you to check my cars as I’m on my third maser and all the same parts have rattled.
Mainly the rear brake light that sits on the rear windshield, which is an easy fix when you work out where it’s coming from!

Ha! Literally, I don't have a single rattle in it at all! Even a friend who I took out in it the other week commented that he couldn't hear any rattles :D

i have two TVRs and I certainly can't say the same with them!

Glad you’re loving it, think I wrote something similar a last year a few months into owning my GT.

On ZF vs MCShift I completely understand why you love the MCS gearbox. I’m lucky enough to be on my second GT, the first was the an GTS MCShift and now I have a Sport with the ZF. The former is 100% more interactive, and fun to use. The ZF is more disconnect brain and go along for the ride but also a pretty good box. I deliberately wanted the latter for my second GT based on how i wanted to use it (relaxed, comfortable touring and not a sports car). I did have the odd moment with the MCS now and again that slightly put me off (tight manoeuvring and being in a long stop-start tailback on a steep hill), but those snappy actual ‘“MCShifts” (full throttle above 5000 RPM upshifts) were epic!

Good to read about people enjoying the experience of Maserati ownership. I can’t wait for the weather to turn so that I can get out more when the roads are warm and dry so I can experience the full fat MC gear change at 7000+ rpm , without the risk of a 70+ mph powerslide.

17 days to unSORNing mine, and getting it out on the roads again, to tune it up. It will then go to the beauty spa for a week of ceramic etc, ready for the summer.

Can’t bring myself to SORN just in case a salt free day occurs and I can get out in it (which has only happened twice this winter) but those occasions were worth it  Plus the underbody is freshly protected anyway thanks to SportsItalia.

Mine's been SORN'd since November. All being well I'll collect it next month freshly serviced, MOT'd, PPF tidied up, Gtechniq'd and with its blocked up old manifolds and exhausts all sorted out.

I sense spring will be its customarily exuberant self in SM-land this year!

There’s some parallels going on here. Mine got gtechniq’d and full front and sills PPFed this summer :D

I've recently just learned how to ceramic coat and I'm absolutely delighted with the results and wish I did it sooner. It's really not hard, you just need to make sure you have done all the prep and be patient. I used Pure Definition and did the glass and bodywork and it's really good, very pleased

I was a bit worried about getting it wrong so I did all my practice work on the smart car...I think I have the cleanest smart car in the station car park :p

I've been meaning to write an update to this post which I started after buying the Granturismo as often people write reviews with enthusiasm going into ownership but don't give a true summary when leaving!

So here goes..

Not once did I manage to refrain from smiling when that incredible V8 roared into life and I clicked the MCShift into gear. The sense of drama that these cars give alongside genuine practically and usability cannot be rivalled by many other cars, and certainly nothing I have owned so far comes close. The rear leg room and access when the seats move forward is brilliant and perfectly suited for a family of four with younger kids. Adding to that, child seats (my youngest is now 5) as long as you use a slim one fit really well and seatbelts are easy to access. The soundstage and punch from the Bose stereo was also superb which again surprised me as I've heard of some complaints in that department but theirs must be faulty or mine was upgraded!

The way the car drove on the open road inspired so much confidence and seemed to shrink around you. This is particularly impressive as it's SUCH a big car! In fact, the physical size of the car when parking is one of the drawbacks but if you plan your journeys and car parks (which I do as I'm rediculous when it comes to car care) then it's not an issue.

Only minor complaint on the road was the self cancelling indicators when turning right into a roundabout which would often drop half way round! But if that's the only gripe on a Italian Supercar, that's just brilliant in my mind.

Age Old Debate on auto VS MC Shift...I was fixated on getting an MCShift car as I knew it was the ultimately the most engaging option. I tried both but stuck to my guns when searching. I did not regret that decision for one second. The sound...the shifts....heaven! Before owning one, I feared that single clutch automated systems would be 'awkward' and 'Jerky' and generally not pleasing to use. True, if I had that gearbox in my Mercedes C250d I would think it was a bad box, but put the silky smooth 9 speed ZF box from my Mercedes into the Granturismo and you would lose the heart, soul and passion that it brought. To anyone on the fence between the boxes, ignore the haters and go with your heart!

A few of my friends have asked why I only had her for a short period and I have told them it is absolutely nothing that the car did wrong. I originally bought the GT as a fair weather daily alongside a smart car for the station and daily chores but the car was just WAY too nice an example to use for the regular school runs etc so it didn't get used as much as I expected. But the biggest factor, I love a convertible and seeing as I only used in totally fair weather it seemed like it was missing something. Cannot blame the car for having a roof!

In summary, the Granturismo is one of the few cars which exceeded my expectations in many respects and is a car that I will always have fond memories of. Will I have another Maserati one day? Absolutely.

Final comment, after not having interest in the private classifieds, she was sold via Richard Grace. Richard is one of the few honest and straight talking guys in the motortrade who knows exactly what he is doing and made the whole process an absolute joy. Genuinely cannot recommend his services any higher. He buys the best cars and I will only retail cars that pass his and his inspection teams checks. I will certainly speak to him when coming back to the fold.

My next journey? I'm having a midlife crisis and male menopause are setting in! I've sold the Granturismo, Smart Car (another brilliant car!!) and my TVR Tuscan and bought a Mercedes C250d cabriolet and collecting a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder (pre LP car) next week. Manual or E-Gear? MCShift made me go E-Gear ;-D

Cheers,

Matt
