went to a bidder in Alderley Edge where a number of footy players live/have homes, wonder if it's the Beckhams

I wouldn’t pay £650k for an Escort RS Turbo for Diana, but I don’t really understand why this is more controversial than the Ferrari that sold for $25m last week. Several people wanted it, so that was the price. We all want/like different things. Why the foaming at the mouth?

For some that Ferrari is only interesting because it says it is in a book, with no real cultural reference point. For others it is a beautiful slice of motoring artwork, rolling historical sculpture.

The RS Turbo S1 is rare anyway, but just three were made in black, and only one was stamped in black and only one was owned by Di. For some this is more important, more aspirational than some Ferrari that won some races at some point.

It is worth exactly what one person was prepared to pay more than another. Nothing has an intrinsic worth (maybe scrap value) - or is there a list of cars, music, films, books, potential mates that are ‘allowed’?

I suppose the reaction on here is from a group of car enthusiasts who will look at the objective performance and merits of the Escort as a motor vehicle. For someone not interested in the car (probably the buyer) but the story behind it then the price Is easier to comprehend as what price can you put on 1 of 1 if the particular story floats your boat. Does anyone know who it was owned by previously? I bet the appreciation was incredible.

But if, for example, Bill Murray’s Maserati Biturbo sold for £Lots, another group of car enthusiasts on a Porsche or Ford forum (for instance)would no doubt be casting shade on any Maserati being worth more than 12p. Objectivity means nothing here.

Exactly my point Nayf. Never has the term it’s only worth what someone is willing to pay been more true.

I regard some of his antics as being an Urban Legend anyway, but, Bill Murray owned a BiTurbo? That's awesome.

He still does, I think. Owned since new, I believe, though I only used this as a salient example as he’s one of only a few current shlebs to be into Masers in a public way.

Even the car has significant value in the collectors car world, its a "1 of 1", look at the prices paid for cars just because the buyer ticked some weird options on an order form, it can add $2m to the price.

We can only assume that whoever bought this wanted it and could afford it. Maybe they think it will make even more next time. Maybe they are the owner of the Daily Express and so having her old motor might give more umph to their next “Diana’s image appeared on a piece of toast” headline. Maybe it’s part of a cloning program.

I think it’s fairly obvious that this wasn’t a purchase that was related to the particular merits of the motor vehicle in question.

must say it couldn't of been better timed for the sale as there were a few programmes on TV only a few weeks and days before about conspiracy theories on crash and the panorama interview yet again, i suppose if you're a royalist and a multi millionaire then it's a no brainer to want to own what is something completely unique and part of British/Royal/ Diana history, wouldn't be surprised if it changes hands again in years to come for far more.
