4200 Spyder Display issue

The AC control of my 02 Spyder is set to 23 degrees and is in automatic mode. The display shows 0 degrees and "Manual". But the hardware works (heating and cooling as it should... It seems it is just a display issue (radio, navigation, trip, and phone display are working).
Sometimes the data is showing up correctly for a while...

Where shall I start my investigation?

what is the temperature reading on your main binnacle display (the outside temp)? If that is showing just a couple of lines then its possible that your external temperature sensor is buggered. This can affect how the aircon system works out what it has to do. Mine does this very occasionally, and once the outside sensor comes back on line the aircon displays properly.

I suspect the screen gets its information over the canbus, so maybe a loose bit of wiring loom to the HVAC controller?

If the bus cable is the issue, the rest of the display unit should show correct things like radio stations or Navi maps...
The thing that the HVAC is working as it should make me believe that it could not be the wiring of the control unit.

If the rest of the wiring is intact, but the data feed from the HVAC controller isn’t working, I assume that only this data would be missing.

Still, you asked for somewhere to start, that’s where I would be looking, at the wiring.

I recently changed the heater core. during the process, I visually checked all wiring and I shook every connector and knocked on every housing

Was the problem present before you replaced the heater core, or has it developed since? If it was before, then I agree, it’s probably not the wiring.

before! I was hoping that someone had the same issue in the past with a solution!

I reckon it’s one of the connectors on the back of the heater control panel. I don’t think the ICE unit does anything except display data from the HVAC panel.

Pull the ICE unit and try disconnecting the plugs in the HVAC. If you find one that has no effect that’s probably the output to the screen. Or you could be more technical and try and correlate wiring colours between the two.

I have a second HVAC panel with a broken knob - tried this already and its the same!

I recommended a reset because mine will sometimes fail to display what I have the dials set to. Just like yours, the fan can be set to auto, but the display will show manual. IIRC, with the ign off, turn the left knob all the way counterclockwise, the fan knob to high, press and hold the econ, and recirculate buttons while turning ign on, but don't start engine. System will do a reset. I don't know, but suspect that there are sensors that stick or fail to pick up the settings. Good luck

sorry to report, that this procedure did nothing - no reset

In the meantime I found ut the correct procedure:
the ignition on / off
temperature to "max cold"
middle knob to "auto" (we don't care about the fan knob)
press and hold the econ, and recirculate buttons
ignition on
both button LEDs start blinking
reset is done after blinkings stop

but unfortunately, it didn't help in my case! :-(
