Hi All .
Is there a ‘how to’ thread for removing the exhaust back boxes from a 4200 Spyder ?
I have searched but not really uncovered a good step by step guide .
Just wondering if it’s worth having a go myself or take it to my local garage , has anyone done this themselves ?
I do fancy giving it a shot , it will give me a chance to have a good clean but not if I am likely to do more harm than good .
Thanks in advance .

Mike .

It is not hard just fiddly/time consuming

1. Safely Jack up rear of car and place on axle stands
2. remove rear wheels and wheel arch linings
3. Undo 2 fastening for exhaust hanger from the side of the box that is in the wheel arch/bumper and the two fastening that are on the rear of the box accessable underneath the car... So what you are doing here is swapping the boxes but leaving the actual hanger in place that comes with the box. Do not touch the bolts that fasten the hangers to the chassis
4 slacken off exhaust link pipes at the centre section clamps and hangers in the middle to give you some wiggle room to remove/refit the boxes
N.B. put a old towel between the tail pipes and bumper to avoid scratches

Spray grease is your friend when wiggling boxes on and off . Believe me I've done it a few times . Soaks the joints the night before and they will fall off ;P

And I put an elasticated gardening glove over the tail pipes . They fit a treat . If you use a towel they can restrict wiggle movement .

The best adopted postion for removing them is to lay completly under the car with your head facing the rear . Wedge your feet up under the chassis and start wiggling while you push at the same time . Swearing also helps
( this aids the boxes to start moving ) Regular tea breaks help you to not start punching the body work. It also lowers your blood pressure .

I find it easier just to remove all the hangers from the body with a ratchet and extension bar to make access easier . Just make sure you note which way round the hangers are ,or you ll be scratching your head when you try to put them back in .

Another good tip to get the pipes straight in the rear spliter is to wedge something under them thats the correct thickness when they are loose , then do up all the bolts . It saves loads of time and they will also be dead straight . Nothing worse than a wonky exhaust when youve finished . Always wedge something slightly bigger in there beacuse the pipe will drop slightly when you remove the packer .

Allow an entire afternoon to do this job . You ll be nackerd after you get the first one off . Then you've got to do it all again :rofl5:

The other piece of advice I would give you is get your local garage to do it . Mine charged me £60 and I still had all the skin on my knuckles .:cancer:
