4200 pre catalyst

As i mounted the SS decats lately, i was wondering about differences in exhaust layout between earlier cars and late cars.
After reading some info at this forum and at Maseratilife, i was shocked to read about precatalyst prblems on later cars.
I read something about "rotten eggs smell", rattling noises etc. As first indications.

So my main question:
Is there some way to predict your main cats are going out?
If there are no faillures stored in the ECU, would everything be fine then?

Funny thing is, that in Holland they just hook up a tester to the car for checking the emissions.
If no failure is found, the car passes the dutch "mot" without problems.
(On earlier cars the exhaust gasses are still examined with exhaustgastesters.)

My 4200 had Larini sports cats fitted when I bought it so I presume the cats went bang and fell apart at some stage. The sports cats are far better than standard and cost a lot less too.

The difference is more the US spec cars having the pre-cats built into the manifolds, unlike the European spec cars being after the manifolds.
If you read Maserati Life the pre-cats are vulnerable to damage built into the manifolds, especially with the steep ramps off the roads.
A few impacts will loosen the internals, plus potentially then suck back into the engine, again especially with the pre-cats being built into the manifolds and being closer to the exhaust ports.

The later 4200 and Gransport also got the US spec exhaust, no difference there.
I keep wondering about the dramatic stories, catalyst debrees being sucked into the engine...

Mine is a 2006 ex German car and has the US version.
Story is that the later EU cars got the US spec exhaust.
But maybe UK cars did not?
