I'm in the middle of replacing a failed door handle microswitch and have removed the driver side window regulator to get access.
With the mechanism out, I noticed that I'm missing the big tension spring as per the pic below. Funny thing is, the window appears to operate as it should, and I have no idea why its missing (its not in the door cavity!)

Wondering if anyone may have a broken/ old mechanism lying around that could be for sale?. I only need the spring, and I really don't want to have to pay the crazy amount for a whole new mechanism.

Here is the part Im looking for.

The window regulator is similar to the 916 Alfa GTV / Spider regulator which can be made to fit so a spring from one of those will fit. There may be broken ones in circulation as well.

Thanks Zep, I read that the Alfa part is quite similar. Watching a couple of used ones on Ebay but both are around £60......seems steep for just the spring but will take this route if I cant find any alternative.

When I did mine it's not easy to put the spring on, so if your window was repaired before it might have been a "mechanic throwaway". The spring helps the motor but the motor probably has enough torque to work without it; until the motor burns out.

Its strange, everything inside the door looks to be original and undisturbed. The window mechanism is working perfectly and has no sign of previous repair. Factory marks line up on the bolts....Its just missing its spring. Who knows what the deal is here. Only went in there to replace the handle switch. Hopefully I can figure out how to get the spring in (if I can get my hands on one)

I'm going to get the part that often breaks its spot welds re welded whilst its out of the car as a preventative measure.

If you are taking apart the regulator I recommend replacing the central pivot with one of these. The strain on the welds comes from the pivot failing and the arms going out of alignment. Both my regulators have failed in the last couple of years. I bought a new mechanism last time but the near side regulator is c.£1000 new now . My local garage has agreed to weld up the failed joint instead, which I know some members have done themselves.

They are also going to replace the pivot with one of these properly engineered ones that I ordered from http://www.blythbrosdesign.com/

Pricey but seem very solid and should prevent a cycle of repeated failures of the mechanism. The garage are doing the repair next week so I’ll report back.

Hi Gooner, I had a look at these too. You have convinced me to do this job whilst everything is apart and being dealt with. Really don't want to be going back inside the door in a hurry! Just ordered a set. Interested to hear how your job goes and any tips as will be fitting them myself when they arrive from the US.

Sure, I’ll happily let you know how it goes. I will probably retrofit one myself to the drivers door regulator that was replaced a couple of years ago. It doesn’t look like a tricky job, but how often have we all thought that :). Welding is beyond me though.

I couldn’t work out why the welds always go. The logic that the problem is actually the pivot makes a lot of sense to me, especially when you see the original item.

Hi, just a quick update now my new pivot has been fitted and the window is working again. The mechanic said it was no trouble to fit at all, and confirmed the original pivot was indeed worn and chewed up. He said the only tricky bit was manoeuvring the assembly in/out of the door and reattaching the big spring.

Interestingly the weld hadn’t actually snapped on this one, unlike my other window. The loud bangs I heard were probably teeth slipping. Looks I caught this one just in time which saved a few quid.

Seems my new pivots have got stuck in customs for the past week, but all set to fit them as soon as they arrive. Thanks for the update and glad you are all fixed now!
