3200 on the horizon!

I joined this forum best part of 2 years ago when I started my search for a late manual 3200. Because the cars depreciated so much many fell into the hands of owners who skimped on maintenance so you have to be patient waiting for a properly looked after one to come along. After reading on this forum the end float horrors, difficulties sourcing some engine parts for an engine rebuild, and that maintenance items such as clutches and timing chains are no longer available, I stopped searching. Started looking at the GS and GTS, which are properly sorted cars, but the GTS is depreciating too heavily for me and the GS just doesn't appeal in the same way the 3200 does.

Despite the above, I'd still buy a 3200 but it would have to be at a price that recognises it's a "ticking time bomb" given the end float risk and lack of parts availability to keep it on the road.

Echo some of the comments here.
With regards to rusty subframes, it seems to affect all the Maserati GT cars so a garaged car is ideal.

Most of the endfloat issues have been sorted early on in a cars life. A good inspection will rule this out.

I bought a 3200 without inspection but then I knew it had problems so it didn't seem worth it. I got it cheap because it had not been cared for and I enjoyed getting it working well (mostly). I have had it 12 years, I only meant to keep it for a year or two and just got attached to it! I have had periods where it ran well for years at a time and other times where it just seemed to be **** bent on being broken. Just come through a lengthy series of heavy and significant repairs and looking forward to 2-3 years of easy driving. I got one key, no red keys and got two new keys and had the immobiliser reprogrammed and have a key which does everything a red key can do. Now the people who reprogrammed my kit are not around any more but I think it can be done so its not as scary as some people make out. Get one that's been kept in good order if you can afford it, and by the time it needs work you wont care what it costs.

Same here, wielding the spanners and doing a bit yourself pays dividends, if I had to pay someone to look after it full time, brilliant as they are, I simply couldn't afford it and would have to let it go, it's that simple.

3200 timing chains, clutch plates and hand brake spring sets are on there way;)

Along with handbrake shoe mounting plates ;)

We could get some knocked up Loz as they don't look too complicated, the usual thing though, the price and getting people interested

By the way, mine were perfect, still had the original paint on them:p

Lucky so and so, I have a duff used one David Askew kindly sent me f.o.c. I'm currently working on making a jig (90% there) to press them out of 1mm stainless sheet.

User Sopanbach on here was looking at moving his on Dall, maybe drop him a line, it's supposedly a well sorted example. Had a good look round it at Newby Hall and it's very nice, history etc you would have to get that from the horses mouth.

Hmmm, all this talk is making me rethink, perhaps my thoughts should veer toward a 4200?

Well Loz, I have discovered that I spook easier than I thought! And investing such a decent wedge into what for all intents and purposes will be a toy, I have my sensible head on.
Can I edit the title of this thread?

I only discovered recently that Superformance have complete 3200 clutch kits for about £500 - shame as I ended up sourcing friction plate from Eurospares, Cover plate privately from Belgium and Thrust bearing from Modena in Germany this time last year for about 3 times that price!

If you are looking at chains I assume you are looking at guides as well?

Interested in back plate as my shoe retaining pin occasionally pulls through

Are handbrake springs for inside drum or actual hand brake lever - mine has recently started sticking and the release button not popping back out?

Don’t know, but looks decent, independent inspection advised, and,
MACERATE once is bad, twice is woeful,
