3200 Hypersensitive Throttle Adjustment

An earlier post on another thread detailed a version of the throttle reset procedure for 3200s but unfortunately was inaccurate. I have therefore reproduced my original post same 3 years back which is strictly in accordance with the original Factory Manuals

With use and due to its design, the "fly-by-wire" throttle system gradually narrows its operating band between idle and full throttle. If left unchecked, this can result in an increasingly sensitive throttle pedal affecting drivability. As it's not exactly insensitive to start with, the result is a PITA with hill starts etc

Whilst you would normally use either an SD2 or SD3 to reset the engine ECU, the factory manuals (Engine volume: page 96 of the Fuel supply section) do contain another approach from the comfort of the drivers seat but do read very carefully.

If you are not sure of what you are doing, leave it to someone who does!

1) Reset the mechanical zero position

Put gear lever in neutral
Switch on ignition (to MAR position) but do NOT start the engine
Do not touch the throttle pedal for 2 minutes
Switch off ignition
2) Reset the mechanical Full Throttle position

Put gear lever in neutral
Switch on ignition (to MAR position) but do NOT start the engine
Fully depress throttle pedal and hold for 5 seconds
Release throttle pedal completely
Switch off ignition
The full text does not specify waiting until the various warning lights have extinguished themselves after switching on ignition, but I do not depress throttle (item 2) or start timing until they have.

By way of explanation, the no throttle setting (tickover or lower value) is 350/650mv whilst full throttle (upper value) is typically 3,100/3,300mv.

Apparently, the management system strategy gradually reduces the full throttle value by 5mv (for the next switch-on) every time the ignition is turned on (whether engine started or not) UNLESS full throttle is applied for 5 seconds at least once in that cycle (eg climbing a steep hill with full throttle etc). Therefore, under certain circumstances, the full throttle setting will gradually reduce, leading to over sensitivity at the pedal. The manual reset procedure restores the upper and lower values to their default design settings.
For completeness and by way of explanation, "flicking the throttle pedal" as suggested by the other poster is not necessary or desirable. The point is that the throttle pot should be adjusted in such a way that the external mechanical stops take the strain at both ends of travel rather than the internal Pot limit of travel. Even if this was not properly adjusted, "flicking" will place the throttle pedal in an unnatural position and therefore could potemtially interfere with the reset procedure.

hope this helps

Cheers Nigelo for clearing that up its much appreciated , these are the finer points we need to clarify to keep on top of any hands on maintenance, please keep it coming as and when you can find the time , any how too's with pics when the warmer weather gets here would be absolutely brilliant, any probs uploading just throw the whole lot over to me or matt , , as you can see we are severely lacking in the 3200 how to department

Warm regards loz

When you switch ignition off after the reset do you leave the lever in neutral or move it to p then turn off

Dem, I believe once the ignition is switched off, the process is done.

How is your revving issue? Is it sorted or at least, you have confirmation of what the problem is?

i took it to london last night and it was really bad, it revved to 5k alone so i had to move it into n then moved it into d and it took off like mad, im going to take it back to hr owen seeing as they had the car last see if they can diagnose it

Hi Nigelo
Just wondered if this could be the problem of my 'hunting engine' at tick over it varies between about 1200 and 900rpm, not excessive but a bit annoying, not sure if its affected the full throttle situation - the weather a bit too bad for that at the moment.
