Just out for the first night time drive in the new 3200 and I noticed that the 3 knobs on the HVAC panel were not backlit. The panel controls all work fine, so I guess a bulb has probably gone(?) What’s the best way to get the panel out?

Beware the little spring!
Also the clips can break on the centre panel - mine have

From memory there’s only 3 bulbs for the whole HVAC panel and you need to take the panel out to get to them not the knobs.

Yep thats the ones, my bad!
The little metal push in clip thing at the top of your second picture is broken on my surround, not the clip but all the plastic surrounding it
Ive replaced the bulbs - will try and get the part number as it took a couple of attempts to get the right lamps

Thank you all, that’s very helpful. It looks like quite a big job with the Becker out too! Also, having looked at the pics I’ve just realised that the light on my clock isn’t working either…

Fixing your clock light is a whole new level of challenge btw
Had to read that twice - can’t be having a broken c0ck
Never the less I fixed all the centre console lamps
Now all back together and the battery voltage indicator on the dash doesn’t work

It’s seems a little unlikely to me that all 3 bulbs in the HVAC and the clock have gone, I’d look for a wiring fault. Getting the HVAC panel out isn’t hard, radio out then panel out. No need for whole dash. Unless you drop something in the vents  or then forget to connect the EML  by the 4th time dash in and out is less than a days work!

Yep ... I was wondering about that. I've been looking at the wiring diagrams but they don't go down to bulb level detail in the clock and HVAC unit. Maybe a connector will reveal itself when I get it apart.

From memory all the wiring from there is pretty accessible by removing the passenger side transmission tunnel carpet, it’s just screwed in through the the carpet.

I just popped the Becker out to have look and the wiring to the back of the HVAC unit is pressed up against something (heater ducting?) so I couldn't get at much. I'm going to Simply Italian on Sunday so I'll leave this until after that. It'll be a little project for next week!

I should add that the photo was taken when replacing the heater matrix - the blown lamps were a bonus to do at the same time

Update: I took the HVAC unit out this afternoon and checked the three bulbs. They were all ok so I started to look at the wiring. I have 12V on connector C pin 7 when the headlights are on but this doesn't seem to be responsible for lighting up the three bulbs in the HVAC(?). I assume this is done off the Rheostat at connector A pin 10 where I have no voltage at all. My rheostat doesn't seem to be working either as it doesn't dim the lights on the instrument cluster. Replacing that maybe worth a try but there's quite a lot of dismantling required to get at it ...
