Thanks all for comments and suggestions.

I have decided to get the cambelt changed and serviced as its well overdue.

I am going to tackle the small jobs myself and get the rear discs done next month.

No issues with the car in terms of drive, no wobble, no nasty noises or clunks, no pulling to one side.

Infact until I had this inspection I was loving the car.

I have a few other cars and this will only do 1k miles per year, so I will do bits gradually.

As for the bones, I have seen these non Maserati ones on Euro Spares, and will see if my specialist will let me provide the parts, as that's a big saving.

Was a shock at first to get such an estimate, but after your assistance and research, I am a bit more relaxed now.

Poor old girl is 17 ! no wonder she needs a few bits doing !

Thanks all again.

Simon

That's more than me, I did 700 miles last year :)

Just for info, I had my cam belt done in Hong Kong Maserati, cost over 3K.. Count yourselves lucky you have places like Emblem and Mike at the Maserati shed.

how do they calculate, so that they end up with 3K?, Official dealers hours shold be 4h or so, but one can change also plenty of material (Cambelt, auxbelt, Waterpump, bearings, tensioner (for cambelt, and auxiliary belt)) I could imagine with material cost in HK that makes it expensive

Like i said i got a quote from Grey Paul Edinburgh of 2800 pounds for a service including timing belt. I reckon it is just profiteering, and based on the perceived value of "full dealer service history". If you want a full dealer service history you pay over the odds for it, and the idea is that you get the car maintained according to the manufacturers recommendation. The cost does not relate to the actual time or the cost of the parts, you are buying prestige or provenance. If you just want the car fixed then the main dealer is not the right way to go. However it does not take long reading through this forum to work out that clumsy repairs can be ineffective, and using garages with no previous experience can be both frustrating and expensive as there are many pitfalls. So be careful whatever you choose to do. I have never had my car in a dealer, but it had a patchy service history before i bought it, and what i could not do myself i got local garages that I know well to do the work and I let them borrow my workshop manual, and also discussed every detail of the work I wanted done so I never let them decide what was to be done. I have clearly accepted advice and dealt with unexpected problems but this has worked for me for over 10 years, and my car runs ok these days :)

and service including cambelt, could/should be: servo oil, differential oil, gearbox oil, fuel filter, brake fluid, sparkplugs, pollen filter, air filter, checking valve clearance... so this keyword cambelt change is one part of the service story
