This advert is saying that the engine in the 3200 is an evolution of the 355's engine with two turbo chargers....This ******** isn't it....The 3200 was the last 'proper' Maserati engine I though......Had nothing to do with Ferrari as that came with the 4200..

I was led to believe the 4200 engine was designed and built by Maserati and then tuned by Ferrari to put in the 430. If so, does that make the 4200 the last real Maserati engine? Answers on a postcard!

"The Maranello men claimed the 3.2 litres biturbo V8 is 90% new, which I don't believe. Counting the no. of new components used, it may be 90% new, but counting the development budget it would not be 90% of a completely new design. Anyway, the Quattroporte-sourced engine received some new features including variable-flow turbochargers (still supplied by Japan's IHI), longer induction manifold, electronic throttle which enhances throttle response and enable 550M's ASR traction control to be fitted. It output 370hp at 6,500rpm, some 35hp up from the Quattroporte. Peak torque of 362lbft emits at 4,500rpm, at least 90% of which is obtainable between 2,700 and 5,500rpm. "

I alwasy thought it was a F355 engine tweaked but it seems not and maybe I read it from their ad?

That's a quite frequent claim Andy. Benevolence suggests that such dealers are simply uninformed, and perish the thought that they would try to hoodwink buyers.

The 3200 twin turbo was never a Ferrari engine. .......The 4200 engine was in the Ferrari first then adopted to the 4200..de tuned.....I'm sure I was also told this by DL when I testy drive a 3200 way back.

I always thought the 4200 was modified and tuned for use in the 430 but was in the Maserati first. Perhaps I was misinformed.

Spot on Dem.....The 3200 was the last of the line to have the bi turbo.........which is one of the reasons why the 4200 is far more reliable...

They way I see it is that tThe 3200 V8 Biturbo engine was a development from the 2800 V6 Biturbo engine as fitted to the Ghiblis. Put the two engines side by side and you can see the similarities, the most notable of which is the starter motor situated at the bottom of the 'V'. They lengthened the engine, by adding 2 cylinders and reduced the displacement of each cylinder. The 4200 V8 engine is altogether different, with, not least, the starter motor mounted on the left side, near to the bottom. Duncan

So my engine is what 20 years old??

.......thats the good news Dem.......apart from being old.....;)......at least it meant it was fully developed.......seems all the other add-ons and management systems used to "control" the latest version in the 3200s weren't as well thought out.

probably right there Dem, 4.2 had upto 400 bhp in the GS, the 4.7 has 440, you think they would have given it more than 440.

Market positioning. FIAT won't allow Maserati to directly challenge Ferrari in performance terms. The ECU mod I had to my GranSport gave a very noticeable change to the character of the 4.2 V8.
