So in an attempt to assist other 3200 users going forward I thought I would create a thread which I will update as I find and hopefully fix the issue(s) I currently have.
The fault developed on my way to work on Friday, the journey was normal up to the point when I got to work and the "slow down" lamp followed by the "check engine light" lit up. the car ran faultlessly for the journey and continued to run normally during idle. the car was switched off with the hope that it would "sort it self out" when it cooled. I came out at lunch time and the start sequence started and the beeps passed, upon turning the key...nothing, not a click. the "slow down" and "check engine" lamps re-lit and the RAC were called. the car was recovered and this is where my work begins.
Oddly when the ignition was switched on the side lights lit, with or without them being switched via the stalk. the rear fog lights were also lit initially.
a battery reset was carried out and now I have;
the front fog lights are on as soon as ignition position is made (no longer the side lights and rear fogs), the rear demister (actually this is on all the time not dependant on ignition position) on, no rear lights at all (side or fogs), no wipers, no outside temperature, the "ERORR" sign on the dash and the airbag light lit. the parking light switch now switches the front fog lights on, not the side lights, no air conditioning at all (no fan or functionality). The front and rear fog lights plus demister indicator LED on the switches are always on as soon as ignition position is made.
Looking through the service manual the IGE (lighting, temperature via the climate control unit), BRIDGE CAN (high CAT temp - slow down) and the A/C control unit (rear screen and ambient temp) are responsible for most of this functionality. I removed the IGE unit and inspected and found a large amount of corrosion from water ingress. It looks old, nothing was found wet, and the oxidisation looks to have shorted between a number of the pins and components on the PCB. The PCB was cleaned up and the module refitted (I know, but I had to try) but the same issues remain. with the IGE removed the lights don't illuminate and the switches are no longer lit. so as a minimum the IGE needs to be replaced, and I am suspicious of the A/C module and perhaps the BRDGE CAN and even the main ECU.
I am not sure where the supply comes from for the starter motor but the relay currently works but the voltage is not there to switch.
Updates to follow...
