Exhaust started blowing on mine a few days ago and had a look underneath and after the centre section there is a large hole. I assume it is possible to remove the centre box and just replace with stainless steel pipes?

i think you would need to replace it with an x-pipe

A quickie on exhausts: For reasons of legality, I never recommend de-catting a road car. As a manufacturer, I could be on a sticky legal wicket. For example, IF the car was was involved in an accident, and the subsequent Police examination discovered Illegal (and thats what it is) modifications to a road car, the insurance could well be void, and in theory I could get prosecuted too. And, a de-catted car will not pass an MOT if it should have been fitted with them from new. Yes, there are ways round it. The garage simply plugs in another vehicle for that part of the test.

X-PIPES: The theory is to have all the exhaust pipes (the primarys) working in unison. The simplest way to explain this is have a look at the exhaust manifolds on a 1960's Ford GT40. They are not that shape to provide equal length, they are assembled in "Firing" order. the Firing order on a Ford 302 is 1-5-4-6=2-3-7-8. So, The primary pipe from cylinder 1, is connected across the engine to cylinder 5. The idea is to create "sucking" in the exhaust system. ie., when a given cylinders gases are exiting, the most recently fired cylinder has already exited, therefore providing a "sucking" effect and dragging the exhaust gases out. The theory behind the X-pipe is based on this, but in a much simplified way. In effect, each side of the engine should provide equal "suck". Not as effective as the method above, but there are benefits to be had.

If any of you are still awake after reading that, have a close look at a GT40 manifold, and it should all make sense.

I have to agree with a lot of that, although some MOT stations will bend the rules. If you have a bump and Police / Ministry / Insurance inspection, they could just come down on you like a ton of bricks, so care is required..!!
