3200 Auto noise

Could this be transmission?

I get a howling noise about 3000 rpm, and a deeper guttural hum on full acceleration. No problem apart from the noise, the performance is fine, no feelings through the steering wheel or pedal, just a loudish noise... any thoughts?

I am wondering if this is not the transmission but the turbos? could be a bearing issue with the turbos. I had both of my turbos replaced and the problem was that the bearings were gone and they spun up late and more suddenly than they should, and there was some noise associated. I would think if its RPM related and not depending on what road speed you have or what gear you are in its probably engine related, and not the gear box. The turbos are supposed to start spinning up in the late 2000 rpms and so the noise cutting in at 3000 rpm sounds about right for turbos spooling up.

well yes if one or both of the turbos are goosed its not going to be cheap no. There are two problems, one is whether they can be refurbished, they are Japanese IHI units so not too hard to find places that can work on them, and new ones are available so no worries getting parts. I got 2 new ones several years back and they were 8-900 each i think. the second problem is getting at them to remove them. You either need the engine out or drop the front sub frame, both pretty heavy jobs.

have a look with a torch underneath and see if you have oil leaking from the turbo bearings, this is usually a sign they are in trouble.

Best I check mine. Sorry, I keep forgetting, 4200s don't need them. :D
