The car had sat for a while so just changed the battery but this made no difference

And it was working fine before it sat?

If it's *totally* dead, I'd be checking the main connections very carefully, and the big fuses on the positive terminal

Double check the battery connections and check the battery you bought is not a complete dud.

Yes it was ok

Hmmm, tricky. Depending on how long it stood and in what conditions I'd start worrying about rodent damage. Be worth checking the ignition switch for basic function if there is *nothing* on the dash when you turn the key.
Do any of the warning lights come on
Do the head lights work?
Do the hazards work?

Agree - if the alarm is powered and doors unlock it ain’t completely dead.

Are you sure that all the leads from the thing that clamps to the positive battery terminal are all tight and actually connected?

The key does turn the alarm on and off though
When my battery went dead last year, the alarm worked for a bit after the car wouldn't start, but then eventually that stopped working too and the car sealed itself like a tomb. The only way in was through the boot. The RAC used their diagnostics to check for any issues and then installed a new battery which thankfully resolved the issue. Hope you find a swift and painless resolution too.

This was similar to my experience when coming back from a long holiday. Except that the car was completely dead (no response from key fob presses). The alarm siren has it's own battery, but maybe there can also be enough residual power in the car battery to work low-amp items for a bit. The RAC came out eventually and sold me a new battery.

I conducted a science experiment. I knew the battery was dying; first day, the car didn't have enough juice to crank but otherwise everything else worked and ran. Day 2, doors would still lock and unlock, but that was it. Day three, tomb.
