Hi guys,
I have been having some chats with a seller of a 2006 QP on the other forum and it is a cat c damaged repaired.
I have asked for images of the car before and during the repaires and from these i can glean that the car was written off and sold as scrap. The front end and several other aspects were sold prior to the "owner" aquiring the car and i have some real doubts about the degree of competance in the remedial works commisioned.
The front wings and bumper, grill and headlights and the bonnet were all sold.
The car looks good in a photo now.... but it was in dire condition before and has what i can only assume is a great deal of filler work.
whilst the seller stated he is not trying to hide anything the car has clearly sustained considerable damages and the roof is dented as well as the entire LHS,so the wing on that side had to be damaged as well,so maybe the second person to attempt a repair?
Have a look to the listing and at the damage that we can see in the images and please give me your views.
does the car represent good value considering the potentially amature repaires?

thanks
P.s do you think that spray shop is a dust free environment?

I could buy that for my first car as it is not a showroom model, will he take an offer of about 5K :) then spend a couple of years restoring it.

Ah, just had a look on the other side....Adam, you don't hold back there mate do you.....Is it a good buy..Hard to say but at 23k it's loads cheaper than a 'normal' 2006 car. You would need to get it inspected and take it from there I suppose.

Yeh I`m sorry...I have dug in a bit.... but i have almost been burnt by 3 of these so called Catagory writoffs and i now see them mostly for what they are ...cars that were better left off the road.(sure if maserati did the work or a respected indy then a lot different)
I could get a decent one for £28-30k so is it really a good buy when you take into account the damages and the lack of a decent workshop for repaires etc?
Once a cat C always a Cat C.
P.s its almost "finished" but the sat nav NIT screen is broken (but the seller will give you the name of a usa seller who has one for sale....?!!!? whatever that means)
I think its got a lot of filler work.
Its up for £23,500 as it is and i doubt an indy inspection will come away" spot free"

If you can get it cheap enough then surely resale value isn'y so much of an issue.

You would struggle to get GT for under 35k to be honest....a normal QP yes but the GT on a 2006 no.

Agree though it doesn't sound as if it's the one to buy as a CAT car......Loz, where are you. Whats your thoughts?

Their fist post on that site, there was no mention of damage [pull the punters in]. Seeing the level of damage I would rather take the bus.

Yeah...agreed.......theres just too much damage.....unknown quantities.....cheap might be good....but it needs to be really cheap or intend on keeping it for a long time..........Loz...will give a definitive opinion...

yes and this was my concern really, should a car of this "capability" be returned to the road when the insurer felt it better not to?
If that car jhad been done by Maserati main dealer or even emblem then it would have some credence with a buyer but done in that small workshop with no oven to be seen and not exactly a dust free enviroment?
And to replace the 2 doors, bonnet, wings, bumper, grill, headlights etc for an unconfirmed £3500,then £4000 to fit the parts and filler and spray the car then refurb the wheels.
The seller stated he would be happy for someone to pay for an inspection but then he loses nothing financially if (or more likely when) if has its shortcommings pointed out.
So rather than pay for the sat nav NIT screen and to get the car inspected at his cost by a known maserati specialist and make the findings available to anyone who asks he has left the onus on the buyer to do this.
If it were me i would have a fully documanted repair supervised at the very least by an Indy and then have the Sat Nav replaced with a good one and the car fully inspected for the potential buyers.
This would i think aid in its sale considerably.
But even at a saving of £10,000 its still a potential money losing purchase surely?

Quite obvious that the car was bought on a whim,Altho we dont know what the purchase price was, seemed good value at the time for Maserati exclusivity , but by the sounds of it he hadn't done his complete homework parts wise and got a bit of a shock, and obviously sold it on to someone similar who has also made a similar mistake,

My main concern is , that it has from the pics sustained a little too much damage initially , and wouldn't be one for me personally, i dont repair for profit so i wouldn't have entertained the car in the first place , ive done some research on the QP generally sometime ago and parts doors wings etc are very expensive as are the small trim parts, both front rear wheels looks to have suffered a clonk so suspension and alignment might be an issue.

I too would be wary of a home/ small body shop repair ( back street ) springs to mind so i too would be very wary , car needs to be all 100% sorted under the £20K mark to make it viable in my view so if it was originally bought for £10/11K and if it was a keeper for 2-3 years then it could of been worth it , but as i already stated original damage was too much for my liking and wouldn't look good and present too good a picture in the before and after pics when resale time came round ,

It seems one of those that would present problems especially for an unsuspecting buyer , but to be fair to the seller , he seems to be up front and is looking for someone who has the facilities and nouse to complete it , , i would want that rear wheel arch filler removed and the arch reshaped properly in steel , some of the panel guys i have used , pride themselves on the limited
amount of filler they have to use , and would rather spend an extra day shaping a panel to perfection rather than use an egg cup full of filler , there the sort of passionate guys you would want to do a job when its personal use

Unless you have access to that kind of quality work at trade rates , i would stay well clear

regards loz

To be fair to the seller, he did originally list it on ebay and states it is a cat c...
I guess posting it on a maserati forum and saying he has one for sale on ebay (and not mentioning it was cat c) was a mistake...but he does give the link and number.
I personally would not buy it...but then I would not slate him for trying to sell it either, in this world it is BUYER BEWARE!
Regards,
Enzo.

Yep the B posts have a shoe made of Boron steel wrapped around the back of the pillar , impossible to pull out on the jig more than half an inch , it has to be cut away and then pulled and the shoe replaced when its in the required position
