With the media and the forces pushing for increased spending for the defence budget and the possibility of UK actually putting boots on the ground In Ukraine, which if it all goes badly pear shaped, how do we feel about forced conscription.
Obviously we would all like peace to prevail but my gut is telling me some serious shiite lays ahead, with France now building the largest European camp within very close proximity to Paris to house 18,000 military troops and up to 23,000 police sort of signals to me that someone has authorised the green light , and before someone says stupidly its for the Olympics ( do some research )
Thoughts guys I'd like to get a general feeling of a cross section of normal people and even some of the extreme views are welcome , it will all help my survey

In my opinion the NATO members should have turned on Russia the day after they stepped foot in Ukraine, you could make the argument that it would have been the start of WW3, but I personally think it would have out Russia back in its box.

Two years on, tens of ‘000’s dead and the threat is the same or worse than it was at the beginning.

You have to punch bullies hard and fast, it’s the only way stop them.

...and it pains me no end that the party of Reagan is now somehow mollycoddling a pint-size despot and debating the merit of aiding in the defense of UKR. I served my time, honorably, and am very glad I did.

Funny how you civilians call for national service and all that bravado. National Service is a misnomer for the right wingers, who say it's a do the lazy good. Well you try push a stubborn mule up a hill.

My father was a paratrooper, he saw active service in Egypt. He told me that there plenty of national service soldiers who didn't want to be there. It's not nice in the slightest that there's someone out shooting live rounds in you direction and the last thing you want is the guy next to you cowering screaming for his mummy. You want a well trained professional, skilled in the art of soldiery , who could keep calm in dangerous situations and deal quickly with weapon malfunctions, because they will happen.

Further to this, we can see National Service in action in Ukraine. The Russians have called up tens of thousands of civilians, given them the minimal kit, a rifle and minimal training and sent them into meat wave of attack akin to the opening scene of 'Enemy at the Gates'. Ukraine too has called up thousands of over 30 year olds, the lucky ones get NATO training but even so they still don't want to go to war.

Bullies always push to see what they can get away with and until some one stands up and says no they will continue - as Kenny Rogers said "Sometimes you have to fight when you're a man"

Just maybe thats what "they" have manipulated the situation to portray to perpetuate an agenda , Im getting that gut feeling again we have been spoon fed another Covid type agenda when all is not what it seems, again it lives that get taken in the process and it beggars belief that humans can do this to one another.

Can't be arsed watching the video as it has that tosspot (akin to David icke) who did coast..

One thing I will say is that all NATO countries have been reducing their defence spending and relying on the USA. Trump was right in pointing out that why should the US spend 4% of GDP on defence when some NATO allies don't even spend 2% (Belgium, home of NATO, 1%). Poland has , for the want of a better word, gone ballistic and ordered well over it's 2% of GDP on defence, simply because it knows it's next. We should all do similar, on a technologically advance combined fighting force.

Whilst I dont disagree with a single word in the reply , Its certainly worth listening to Colonel MacGregor

There is nothing manipulated about one country invading another

Agreed, Putin has his own false narrative that he's pedalling. His reach is beyond his armies. Spies are being caught throughout Europe as well as chinese ones too. His social media influence is being curtailed too. Wanger the PMC was also a troll farm.

We've made the mistake of ignoring Georgia, Crimea and now Ukraine. Now it has to stop.

hes right to the extent we have been poking Russia since the 90s

The wall came down and the USSR dismantled, and both EU and NATO promised no expansion into Eastern Europe. Then has done everything possible to do precisely that. Russia has seen itself get further and further pushed into a corner as the former soviet satelites align with the west.

The events of the last few years should have been inevitable to any of our politicians

Im tending to lean this way as well , Im all into giving playground bullies a thick ear , but if it turns out he was provoked similar to how Putins/Russians feel than you can understand his response , the awful waste of human life leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.
Its the small man syndrome that is Macron and his current tactics of promises to Ukraine that realistically threaten the lives of my grandkids which will soon be reaching conscription age , what europe does directly affects us here , it wont be Camerons/Ritchies kids that get fed into the conscription system

Nothing wrong with a bit of national service
It seems to work well in Israel and Switzerland. Bringing the average teenager up to suitable fitness in the UK may be a challenge unless we are conscripting cannon fodder like the Russians.
Loz, I am generally in favour.

At least the Ukrainians have pride and want to defend their country (in the main).
