The problem with supercharges are u need to make more hp than you use just to run the SC where as a turbo you don't as the SC spools up using the engine with pullys and belts and the turbo just uses the exhaust gasses

If you really want to go do a fast bhp upgrade for cheap ish money then look at nos, u could push that engine to about 600 horses safely without to much modding and it would come in at around about a grand

You obviously havent seen the prices of replacement pistons then Cobratwin, shells are relatively cheap but the tensile stretch bolts that hold it together are also around £300 for 16 bolts , then there's the rebuild cost , na i'll leave nos out of the equation and just be happy for engine to produce well within its limitations and not on the edge of the limitations

parasitic losses with a supercharger
lag with a turbo
waiting for the bang with NOS (ok limited duration)

Mix of turbo & supercharging is the only bolt on way.

A progressive nos kit done right and on an engine like the v8 shouldn't need upgrading as long as your to stupid about the power increases you try and extract, I should think 600 horses would be well within the limits of the masser engine but try pushing out more and your asking for trouble if you don't increase the internal strength of the engine. The nos is less "harsh" on the engine then the equiverlant SC Or Turbo. So pushing more than 500 horses out via the use of a Turbo or SC and you would need to do internal strengthing of the engine pushing the over all cost of the build up.

Just my personal opinion though and should not be confused of that of a sane man.

£19 a bolt aint bad. And an easy fix - just buy the aircraft grade non stretch jobs (at about £30 a bolt if i remember).

Im purely a bystander where Nos/turbo/SC are concerned , although i used to have a supercharged Hpe volumex standard factory issue years ago (awesome car for its day ) never yet added or modded to an engine , too many horror stories of blown engines for my liking

Im by NO means an expert and given the chance I would pick a NA engine over any kind of performance kit Nos/SC or Turbo but having built a busso v6 3.8 SC'ed I really can understand the pull it has on people.

The only experience I have of superchargers is 2-stroke motorcycles (because that is what they are to work) and my mates MkII Golf G60 that was outrageous to drive just had so much bottom end grunt it was like someone kicking the back of the chair!

Turbos I have done but I find you end up driving the turbo not the car (or bike).

I prefer the more natural oomph of the supercharger for sure!

Oh yes and NO2 I had a mate who had it on a Kawazaki GPZ1100 back in the mid 80's when they first opened the new A13 from Grays to Basildon and let's just say It scared me silly pressing the button for just a few seconds I missed the next junction!!! Got to love cross-ply tyres on a superbike!!!!!

Elise vs Exige S. Friend and I used to do track days together. Very similar spec cars apart from the SC; exige had about 40 bhp up on the elise according to the same RR. Yet on most tracks neither of us could get away from the other...even when we swapped cars.

Theory we came up with was the extra weight of the SC gubbins took more effort to brake (brakes were the same) and the higher CofG slowed the car down in the twisty bits. Effect was magnified on the elise/exige due to the low weight no doubt. I also think that the NA had more...controllability over the power, I was always much more confident getting on the power coming out of a corner in mine than in his; he said the same. Never managed to isolate that to the additional weight or the power delivery though. Things like tyres and brake pads made a much larger difference on track than the SC.

The biggest advantage for the SC was on the road - I'd have to work mine harder (higher revs to keep in the VTEC) to keep up.

Or you could be the one to gain mega Kudos when the time comes to change it and go for an engine swap but for the 4.7 , like this one

2009 (59)

Maserati Quattroportte S AUTO 4.7 Rolled

Cat B engine runs

£6450

Its at south west salvage , that price is for the whole car , engine would be around £4.5K or less if you bought the whole thing and sold what you didn't need to David Askew

interesting eh 4.7 gransport sounds fun and Kudos points

Or and I think I'm losing the plot slightly here but buy this and a 156 GTA with a blown engine....... Transplant the masser parts over and omfg....................

Just catching up...Looks a nice car but I'm with you Dem...Its just a bit too much for the miles...But then thats the starting point.....So a few £'s off and as long as its a keeper then could be worth going for....Silverleaf do tend to sell some nice cars...

I'd say a good 60-70000 mile car, with history etc, at circa £21k was far better value than a 100,000 mile car for £2k less.
