Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a duo select / automatica aesthetically. I know the duo select is a clunky change and the new gearbox is miles better so want to buy the new one if possible. I understand it was changed in Feb 07 but wanted to know how to tell the difference in pics?

Cheers Andy, thought this one was cheap but got excited, thanks for the heads up on it or I might have bought it!

You are certain I presume, but I read on Parkers that the new model came out in Feb 2007 and I'm sure I've read that in some other places too. This is an 07 Sport GT but appears to be the duo select unless it's a cambiocorsa and therefore doesn't have a gear lever. I'm a bit confused by all the different gearboxes.

Duo select is basically the same as cambiocorsa..Even when the Auto came out in 2007 you could still order a duo select right up until the face lift came in. Lots are advertises as Auto but are duo select..This is because if it's not manual then people see it as Auto. But it's simple..gear stick auto..no gear stick duo select(cc)

That seems good value as a main dealer would charge you 40k for it.

Have you manage to sell you lovely GS yet?

By the way, it does seem very good value. However, I sold the last QP I had, a duo select, mainly as I didn't like the gear change, it was the only thing I didn't like about it so I' d be stupid to buy another. Definitely would have one with the newer automatic gearboxes though, but they're a lot dearer.

Ah, get it....yep Auto is the one for you then. The Auto is suppose to be the better option. Remember all the reviews when it came out said it was the gear box the car had been crying out for. Good luck with your search and looking forward to seeing some pics when you get one.

Thread resurrection on the Duo-Select vs ZF auto issue.

Just wanted to confirm, is it fair to say that the 2007 onwards QPs with the ZF auto instead of the Duo Select don't chew clutches every 40,000km or less like the Duo Select? Do the ZF autos have their own problems?

Not sure which way to head at the moment. Have heard good things about both.

I think it is fair to say that the full auto will not wear the clutch as the duo select does Cavalier...
Whether it is 40k miles or less is debatable, really depends on how it has been driven,
keep a duo select in automatic, keep reversing up hills etc and it will last a lot less than
keeping it in manual...
The two have very different characteristics, my advice would be to drive both...
mine is a duo select, and I love it...:shy1:
not because i own it, but it is just so much fun to drive,
Regards,
Enzo.

Many thanks, as always Enzo.

Part of the reason I ask is I would be reversing up the incline of my driveway every morning as I have an underground garage.

Assuming this would take it's toll over time on the Duo-Select? There's 1 or 2 at the moment that have come on the market and are very tempting.

Hi Cavalier,
Yes, reversing up an incline would take it's toll on a duo select as the clutch is always slipping in reverse mode,
I'm not sure how to quantify the mileage you would get though...hmmmm

Enzo.

Hi Cavalier,

Later Maserati QP's share the ZF automatic gearbox with current models of Jaguar cars. They are dependable and indeed have a very good reputation. If you are going to be tackling a steep driveway on a regular basis with the Duo Select arrangement then I recommend that you consider this carefully. Depending on the length and severity of the incline you could well experience an acrid burning smell (similar to brakes) or even smoke. This is evidence of stress and will likely lead to reduced clutch life. (Currently clutch replacement on the Duo Select QP costs circa 2k) However, you should be able to take steps to satisfy yourself about suitability. My suggestion is that when you test drive one see how the car behaves on your own drive or if this cannot be done then another similar incline....... Good luck with your purchase.

Regards,

Paul

Hi all, I have been negotiating a deal on the qp in link above, but being so far away (Central Scotland) it is not easy - I knew it had been for sale for a while but did not realise so long (at least July if this post and link are correct!?). Anyone looked at it or got any detail? Was registered FIL 428 but now on a 04 plate - FIL 428 on a GranTourismo now.

Hi Dougie,
Sorry, have not seen this car before, so don't have any details.
I personally would not let the time it has been for sale put me off,
looks to be a lovely colour combo and very good spec, 35k, fsh, etc...
Like it very much,
Regards,
Enzo.

Cheers Enzo - Like the spec myself, i am just being suspicious - does seeem that qp's can hang around for sale for a while, not suprising at this end of market i suppose. Especially in this current market!

Would be my first Maserati so crapping it a bit! I have run Alfa's for the past 13 years, was lancia before that. If you have the time a PM or post on what to check and consider would be great :)

Unless the car comes from an authorised Maserati main dealer, I would advocate an inspection...
it would be money very well spent, even just for peace of mind,
and quite often the cost of the inspection can be offset with a little bargaining if faults are found.
Ensure that the following are present (can be purchased seperately if missing, but would be good if were with the car):
2 remote keys/fob
Leather wallet containing Owners manual, Multi media System manual and (most important) the service book.
A credit card sized code card containing Electronic Code and Mechanical code
A note of the radio code and quite possible a CD code (I have 2 codes, but have only ever had to use the radio code).
There are 2 compartments in the boot, if you remove the first cover, the spare wheel and jack etc are visible...
If you remove these, there is another cover and below is a compressor and tool kit.
The impact area at the front of the rear wheels (including the rear doors) are subject to stone chips,
I would also check that all the electric gadgets inside work...I have never had any problems with mine,
but there is a lot to go wrong.
Regards,
Enzo.

Bought mine in March '09
had approx 36,000 on the clock, now on 52,250
Booked in for a service in 2 weeks time at Grimaldi engineering (approx £700 + vat)
had a major service 12 months ago at 43500, that was £1000 +VAT
Excluding petrol (where I get 20 mpg on a long run, and down to single figs when press on),
I have had very little expense...failed the MOT on one headlamp beam too low last March,
luckily it was fixable so cost about £100, rather than £1000 for a new unit...
had a lazy drivers window, again was a relatively cheap fix, just needed lubrication.
Had front and rear squeeks from the suspension, this turned out to be the anti roll bar bushes,
and again just needed some lubrication...I spent more money on sports exhaust and DBW,
but that was my choice rather than needed doing,
Regards,
Enzo.
