My 4200 CC I have to wait up to 30 min at times for it to start. Mind you this happens when I am leaving the grocery store, mall etc... It has gotten so bad that the motor will cut off while ideling or at low rpm's (like going over a speed bump). I have taken it to numerous mechanics (dealership and independent specialist) and they have not been able to disgnose the problem. I put in a new F1 pump relay and no change. It's generating no codes nor will it replicate at the dealers... I'm lost. Last night I left and drove a mile down the street to pick someone up. While waiting maybe 5/6 mins the car went into neutral and cut off. Wouldn't restart for 20 mins. After priming it 5/6 times it started on the next start. I hated to prime. It has been to the dealer two times. 2 mos and 3 weeks. They can't get it to duplicate. It conked out last night after a ten min drive across town and as I came to a stop it stalled out.

Sounds like its time to ship it across to some of our Indie experts here in the UK Mr VC!

No seriously...a few of the guys will pop by and give you some postive feedback.

Welcome to our forum BTW!

Check the easy things first.

My initial though is a loose battery cable, going over a bump triggers it.

Next is the fuel cutoff switch, the one that triggers as a result of an accident.

It's a difficult one when you cannot see the car or experience the fault. Hot starting issues can come from the TDC sensor but surely that would register an engine fault code.

So engine cutting out without fault code points to it not being a direct electrical fault so if it's not the battery I would look closely at the fuel system.

Does it splutter to a stop or is it like the flipping of a switch?

First off

1) When it reverts to neutral is the engine cutting out , and or the cc light coming on ,
2) Does it only ever do it when the engine is warm
3) When was the last time you had the F1 hydraulic oil checked for level

Sounds rather like a problem i had on my 2003 4200 , things got to the stage where nearly everytime i went over a speed hump at very low speed obviously , the CC light would come on and the car would revert to neutral , i would switch off the ignition for a few seconds and then the car would reset to normal , this got progressively worse over a few months , untill on a trackday the F1 pump finally went

After a new pump was fitted the problem has never re-appeared , so i would suggest check the hydraulic oil level to the pump is good , and if that doesn't cure it also change the pump, remember the pump is the same as on the Alfa selespeed so no need to pay Maserati dealer prices for the pump , just go to an Alfa dealer for the same thing at a quarter of the cost

The earlier pumps are well known for arcing out eventually burning out , mainly caused by the relay switching on and off all the time , the wiring iside the pumps is far to close to the casing and eventually caused pump failure , If it is the pump replace the fuse and relay aswell

I am surprised the dealer hasn't been able to diagnose and rectify the problem

regards loz

The car only goes into neutral when I'm sitting in idle for a few minutes. Once it goes into neutral it idles and stalls out.
Sometimes the car will not start at all for maybe 10/20 mins. The other night it caught off and would not start back up for about an hour and a half.
It just recently started cutting off in neutral as the idle rpm is now at about 700. The car doesn't seem to have the same roar and power in neutral as usual.
I haven't had the F1 Hydraulic Oil checked. I will. It's an 04 4200. The CC light hasn't come on at all. I'm puzzled the dealer can't figure it out either. Mind blowing. They had the car twice once for 6 weeks. and a few weeks late for 4 weeks. I'm stumped. I'm in the US (Raleigh)
