Need to replace my front speakers

Hi all,

The last couple of times I’ve been in my car, I’ve noticed that the passenger side front speaker was all crackly and muffled. I’ve just had a quick look, and the foam padding around the edge has just dissolved (presumably due to age?)…

Have others done an upgrade here? I don’t listen to the stereo that much in the car, but right now it sounds awful?

I just had my non Bose front speakers replaced by Audison Prima component speakers. What a difference. I wouldn’t put OEM speakers in if you’re replacing. They stuffed the door cavities full of dynamat and that has also made a huge difference to tyre/road noise.

Indeed - I think I might make this the point at which I swap out the Becker head unit as well, and try and bring the stereo into the 21st century.

I’d like DAB radio, Apple play, Bluetooth streaming, Waze, etc...

Has anyone used these people before? Or other recommendations in Surrey / surrounding areas

I went for the Alpine HU in my GS as I didn’t fancy a flip up screen. Green back lighting (apart from the blue on/off button when off), DAB, Steaming. I am sure there are more up to date options now though.

This is what I suggested (on a related thread about the door speakers : 4200 Sound Upgrade from stock (non-auditorium)) as an easy replacement -

"The thought of dismantling the centre console, rear seats and shelf, plus door cards to install a 'total' sound system made me feel a bit faint. So I've gone for the minimum possible upgrade that seems to offer the most benefit. Agreed, the front door speakers are very poor quality, so it was simplest to do a direct replacement with a 2-way speaker. I disconnected the factory tweeter and installed a pair of 6.5" Focal ISC units (about (£90) wired into the factory woofer lead. These have a central tweeter which has an adjustable orientation, so it can be pointed upwards towards the driver.
Sound quality is noticeably superior and the problem of the 'pointless' rear shelf speakers can be mitigated by setting the fader in the NIT to be weighted almost totally towards the front speakers. I've also replaced the CD changer with the Yatour player, so almost 500 tracks on each SD card to listen to. It's obviously possible to spend £££ on top grade car audio, but I'd recommend this route as a painless way to achieve a much more tolerable cabin sound than the standard setup."

Thanks @claymore - I’m fairly sure my GS is going to be a keeper for a few years, so I’m happy to spend a few quid on it.. however, I don’t listen to the stereo that much when I drive it, and my exhaust is properly loud right now, so it’s never going to be a perfect sound stage...

Buy Focal component door speakers . I did . They are exellent and far superior to Apline for about the same money . Replace the mids (back seats) and dissconnect the shelf speakers altogether . Also Dynomat the insides of the doors and you will not believe the differance in sound .

How does that work then...?
Disconnecting both tweeter and woofer from the door, and rewiring with only the factory woofer wiring..that drives the higher frequency despite the presence of a cross-over ?

Strange- its only rated @160W max from what I can see...and there is no tweeter in the mid car location, is there ?
Are we saying do the mids, or the door, or both....OR does it make no difference really..? Or does it depend whether your amp/setup/system is GS or 4200 based...?

Sure can talk bollox on this forum !!!:alan2::D

Those are what I used in my fronts. I used (below) to replace my rear speakers . The rear shelf speakers are usless as they just fire sound into the rear screen and sounds much clearler with them disconnected . Focals may or may not be more powerfull than Alpines , but they are far superior in costruction . These are only thier cheap range cost speakers . Thier expensive lines are seriously good .

Thanks for clarifying..( still not getting the 240W rated units in any search engines results- but this but a detail at this point EDIT- I think I see how retailers are arriving @240W now...) Are the independent tweeters worth it for the doors ?
Id like to dynamat the inner skin..Im sure 20sqft would cover it for the doors but is 2mm thick enough ?

Iv replaced my Becker with an Alpine, and lost the Amp. Assuming these would still work fine without an external amp and just powered by the HU

Mmm...scr3w this. Maybe next time...
Id need a complete amp install, with fronts & mids, with extensive dynamatting to make it worthwhile, from what Ive read... (incl subwoofer)
I refuse to spend another year with (half?) decent weather, and the car in pieces:as001 (2):...so a basic front driver upgrade it is. As claymore has suggested.
Ive still got a "to do" list before I drag it back out onto our pock ridden, UK roads for another year as it is....
Something I notice from a few hours of trawling older threads. There is significant confusion and/or similarity with the GS . It seems people have spent time and money on this, only to discover their sh1tty 4200 Infotainment doesnt sound much better...! :urock:

Noise of the engine is always better anyway! :p
