Insurance this year..
4200 came in for renewal at nearly double (Geoffrey insurance). Straight on go compare, got it back to almost what it was last year. Cancelled Geoffrey and gave em an earful for trying it on, because that I do not appreciate.
The Mini, weirdly, (06 plate Cooper S) came in on renew (Lloyds) as almost identical to last year. So renewed.

I just think they're getting more snidey with p-take renewals. And there's no way I'll let them requote me once they've tried it... love it when they ask that

Not really. He just fails to explain the difference between the current/new ones, and the previous model. The new ones are not stolen, so insurance isn't a problem. It's (approximately) the ones from 2017-2021 that were being stolen (mainly from places such as London). But these are being upgraded for free from dealers, so it's not really such a big issue any more.
There's videos on YouTube interviewing the head of security from JLR that explain it better than I.

On related news, I have a new Range Rover Sport be delivered on Thursday for an extended test/loan. I've always had full-sized Rangies in the past (such as the one I have now), so it'll be interesting (for me at least) to see what I make of the Sport.
Ewan, my friends who have the new RR only had problems (6k premiums) when they upgraded from the 2013-21 models. They live in Guildford and London so that is a big part of the problem. Residuals are crashing though, early cars that had the premium are now c100k less. A chap I know just p/ex'd his Tacan turbo S after 2 years this week and dropped 100k too so perhaps that's the norm for a lot of cars these days. I think I'll stick to zero depreciation cars from the 90s and 00s!!

Agreed - location plays a big part when it comes to insurance details.

The Taycan Turbo-S has huge depreciation. By far the worst of any Porsche, though partly because it's so expensive in the first place, and partly because it's an EV. That said, there are deals on them now because of that (for company buyers that need to purchase new to qualify for the low BIK rates). Apparently there are good deals on the 911 Turbo S as well. Bottom line, the top end models are depreciating a lot, while the lower down the scale ones are not. A base 911 depreciates far less than a Turbo S, for example. (That said, no one is actually paying list price for a Turbo-S in the first place, so some of the depreciation is actually pre-factored in.)

As for the RR, there's no big depreciation (yet) on the new one (P460e). It came out in August, and there are still virtually none available second hand and there's still about a years waiting list. I know, as I'm still in the queue having ordered back in August when it first came out.

But of course, it will depreciate in time, and far more than the depreciation-free modern hero cars from 20 and 30 years ago. So you'll not find me faulting that ownership plan one jot.

Used EV still qualify for the same low BIK rates but not necessarily tax offset (although I am told EX Demo or nearly new still qualifies)

Very interesting indeed.
Needs the Law Enforcement getting on the Dark Web and shutting these Criminals Down.

10 minutes in I suggest someone hasn't randomised their seeds properly. VAG did this a yew years back.
Sounds more PornTube than car theft.

I have a couple of (non-Apple) tracking fobs on stuff. They work well.
Apple fob things: I think these aren't great at theft tracking because they now notify iphones that remain in proximity for some duration of time that they are being tracked (for good anti-stalking reasons). What are you using and does it avoid the 'Apple issue'?

Good point. Mine are generic from Amazon. Can't recall about the Apple notification bit, will have to go and google again!

It's an odd thing, the tracking. I sat next to someone on a flight in January who must have had airtags because for a while after landing (maybe 20 mins) I had a message on my phone saying [something like] I was being tracked by an AirTag. Which I wasn't. But if I was I could have made it beep, found it and thrown it away.

So the simple answer appears to be 'no'

But, there's some unclarity on how long a device needs to be with your phone before that alert gets triggered. Also it's not clear if the device can be turned off by someone that's not the owner (or what that turning off actually does) So probably not a perfect solution. Cheap and cheerful, though.

So good for cases and so on. Maybe not so good for cars

More robust would be a full GPS and SIM based solution.

High sub fees on those, though.

I just got a quote from Howdens. The rate was ok, policy good... but they insist on a Cat 5 tracker, which is £200 per year. Hmph.

Nah you can buy stand alone units. Effectively a cheapo mobile phone. Cloud based. I'll dig some links out if you want

Yes, you can do that but not if someone has removed the speaker from it, which is a simple thing to do! And then it’s going to be a lot more difficult to find.

Going back to the original topic, the key is to seek alternate quotes a few weeks before renewal - that way you’ll get the most competitive rates.

If you seek alternate quotes a few days before your renewal, the insurance companies know you won’t have much choice, so you won’t get as competitive a set of rates.

Fleet insurance due this month and the renewal is £125 more than last year. Quick compare the rat quote on the family barge showed their cheapest offer to be £200 more than the multicar police... so sticking with present provider again.

Don't think the price rise is bad as it works out at £21 extra per car.

I posted on the good morning thread that my renewal came though for my 2013 Mercedes C250 from Tesco. Last year £248 this year £450. Taking p1ss. Cheapest I could get was £348 with Aviva.

Just renewed the M140i/Pinin on a multicar policy this week. Up 35% with Aviva.
It's the norm unfortunately.
Think I will be selling the Pinin.
Extremely useful vehicle to have around, but now after 5 years ownership and with my daughter now driving with her own car, it gets very little usage. I can't afford to be paying the tax, insurance, maintenance, E5 petrol, on a non toy, that does now maybe only a thousand miles a year.
