due to a wind warning and only Saturday.

"It is with deep regret that we have taken the decision that the Goodwood Festival of Speed will not go ahead tomorrow (Saturday 15 July 2023). After consulting meteorologists, health and safety experts and other key stakeholders, we have taken the decision to close the event site due to a severe wind warning in the Goodwood area.

On-site safety is our highest priority and the forecasted high winds will pose a serious risk to various temporary structures across the site. We politely ask that you do not travel to Goodwood or attempt to access the site.

This decision has not been made lightly and His Grace, The Duke of Richmond, along with the whole Festival of Speed team, are deeply saddened that we will not run the event on Saturday for the first time in its 30 year history.

The event will resume as planned on Sunday.

Please note: Sunday is a sold out day. Anyone with a Saturday ticket will not be able to access the site. All ticket holders for Saturday will be communicated with in the coming days regarding a refund, and we ask that customers requesting refunds please do not try to contact the ticket office over the weekend.

Please pass this message on to any other ticket holders in your group.

Thank you for your understanding – further updates will be provided via email in due course. If you are camping over the weekend, you are welcome to stay in the campsites. Please be careful during the high winds and consider taking down gazebos and awnings, securing tents with additional pegs or demounting during the peak wind period. If you have any problems, please keep in touch with Goodwood through our campsite
managers in the office."

I appreciate I don't have to organise this stuff, but really?

What actually are the odds of someone getting injured compared to the day to day odds?

C
not sure the logic but it may be wind force or lightning, both forecast tomorrow. Does seem slightly odd at a motorsport event that relies on hay bales for safety!

Cancelled for tomorrow, just had email

Gutted as we were so looking forward to it. We had a hotel booked for Friday and Saturday but last week decided that it wasn’t worth the cost and decided just to drive up and back in the day so cancelled. That saved us some pennies as we would have been there on Friday before we knew it was cancelled.

I think it’s the fact that they have lots of tent structures there as it only takes one of these blowing away and hurting people and they will get a sh1t load of ‘no win me fee’ claims. Most of the parking is in a field….Cars getting stuck would be a nightmare. Goodwood will lose a fortune cancelling Saturday so doubt they have taken the decision lightly.

Can’t land as many helicopters in high winds ;)

Gutted for you, we were there Thursday for the first time and after a little shower in the morning we got sun burnt..

I think it’s the wind warning rather than the rain that caused the cancellations of these events.

A marquee can suddenly become one **** of a kite!

Oh I get that, but I strongly suspect the warnings are overblown (pardon the pun)

It's breezy here, indeed, but nothing like the predicted doom

tend to agree, storm in a teacup, just a bit of wind so far and those trade tents are proper things and properly secured and not your usual mickey mouse village fair ones, might be to do with not voiding public liability insurance perhaps and heeding official meteorological advice ??

Insurance companies are becoming more risk adverse.
I'm doing a project at the moment with an industrial oven installation. It has so many safety devices including water fire suppression system, however the insurance company still insists the room it sits in becomes a fire box rated for 2 hours. On top of the structural works, it then needs auto closing fire proof shutters, fire dampers on all the ventilation ducts, flues etc. It's like something from a James Bond villains den! It's not even like the oven is in a basement of a highly populated building, it's a ground floor shed! Then the main supplier of fire rated boarding, Kingspan, has just lost its accreditation for such panels!

yep, have noticed insurance companies are applying more conditions/endorsements on commercial policies, problem is a lot of commercial sheds are built with composite panels which are fine if purpose built and not retro fitted, however, it seems some insurance companies are still unwilling to quote even when technically no issue

Saved me a wasted 9hr return journey, but I had one upset 15 year old daughter last night when they cancelled ...

Lego apparently is the answer....

And for me, more bits for the mazza turning up.
