I've never heard of this before but someone suggested having a different oil for winter /summer any one come across this theory before?

Yes definitely a thing but not really in this country. If you live somewhere cold it’s important as is winter diesel, pre-heating etc etc.
Winter oil has antifreeze in it...
Is that not why we use multigrade?
Is the right answer...Yep the ?W is it winter viscosity the other figure is viscosity at 100c
But often manufacturers will recommend a different grade for cold whether so say 10w40 here but winter in Alaska a 0w40
