So I have been here before a while back as I am sure many of you have. However this time seems to be the right time to make some wholesale changes.

I have my 2007/07 mint 4200 I have had for about 5 years I think that I bought from the 1st owner at 10k miles. It has now hit the heady heights of 15k miles and is still mint. Best example of a 4200 I have driven by a long shot and drives like a new car. Trouble is it is a total garage queen which has hindered me using more than I probably should have. It has still been used regularly and enjoyed but I can see it being used less so now as I just don't do as many miles or journeys as I did. With ongoing non-car projects now and over the next couple of years I suspect I will use it less.

I also have my 2010/10 Jaguar XJL SuperSport that I also love too but again just not using it as much as I would like. Then I have a work/business Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Commercial I have had from new that is again doing less miles. The 2 x Peugeot GTI's will remain as they are classics and not depreciating also great fun to drive. The TVR Chimaera 450 SC is very rare and unique so it seems to make sense to keep this as again is not depreciating. Also would be pretty impossible to replace easily as is a pretty special example after about £40k been spent on it by the previous owner.

I have recently sold my wife's Discovery Sport HSE Luxury that was great but as kids schools changed was doing less miles and also very short journeys. I have just replaced this with a brand new MG ZS EV that seems to be a perfect fit now for the current requirements.

So I have some decisions to make for my cars now. I will be selling the Outlander as don't really need a 2 seater commercial any more for work use as work use has changed a bit since the pandemic. So the plan I think seems to be to sell the Outlander, XJL and also the 4200 then buy in two replacement cars. One will be a do it all 7 Seater SUV kind of thing that can be used for work also longer comfy family journeys. Current thinking is a 3-4 year old Audi SQ7 V8 Diesel.

The most important decision is what to add as the other car. I love the 4200 and it is a great car possibly the best 4200 out there. However I am looking for something the next level up in specialness I guess. I don't need 4 seats so it can be a 2 seater. Don't need much practicality and it doesn't really make sense for it to be massive. A manual would be ideal as well as don't need a GT style auto cruiser. Doesn't need to be a track car as will be mainly/all road use. I'm also less fussed about mileage or age as don't want it to be a garage queen although it would be stored in the garage as want to be able to use it as much as I can being less worried about using it.

I really enjoyed the V8 Vantage I had and would say it was spot on. A better drivers car than the 4200. The V8 was plenty powerful enough for me and out of the box it was spot on power, sound, looks and everything really. I have also found myself looking at R8 V8 Manual's but of course a Strad starts creeping into thinking too. Also do 911's, Cayman's and F Type's start entering the fray as well? Of course a 4.7 GT S MC Shift would be great but is it special enough and maybe the wrong type of car for the required use?

It will be very hard to sell the 4200 as it has been an amazing car and the reason why I came here in the first place many years ago. Nothing has every gone wrong, it has been garaged all its life, it has had an annual service and inspection from main dealer or the best renown specialists from new and really wants for nothing. I have always spent what needs spending but other than routine maintenance at 15k miles from new I guess you don't expect much to go wrong. I know I will never find another 4200 like this ever again so have committed to that being the case. Cars like this don't come up often and maybe even less so now than 5 years ago.

I guess ideal budget for both would be £80k but I could push to £100k if required. The SQ7 is about £50k so would leave me £30-£50k for the other car. Or I could spend less on the daily if you like so Q7 V6 Diesel instead of SQ7 for about £30-£35k that would leave me say £50k-£65k for the other car. I could sell the TVR and increase the budget further but that doesn't seem to make sense as I still love the uniqueness of this particular TVR and again I would not find anything like it again easily.

Has anyone had any similar situations and what did you do? Or has anyone got any thoughts that may help me to the final destination please?

I can't claim to have yet been in a situation like yours... but if you were fond of the 4200 and want to retain/emulate/enhance that experience with something special, have you considered a GS MC Victory?

Dean's is the nicest 4200 I've ever seen up close. If staying with a similar era Maser then MC Victory or a GS Spyder for me.

However I'd rather keep that 4200 and use it more.

Tough call for sure. I think maybe Covid and being 50 next year is pushing on to move to another chapter in my life.

Just noticed you can get manual V6 F Types too.

WHy don't you just get rid of the two you want to and keep the 4200? If there's nothing out there, use the 42 more?
I did think of that but want more of a rewarding drivers car. The 4200 is great but having the Vantage made me realise how much of a better drivers car it is. Depends what you want I guess.

I wouldn't have thought that a GS MCV would be much better imo. The GT (S, Sport or Stradale) on the other hand is completely different to the 4200/GS family. Cetainly bigger but just as quick and nimble on the B roads. If you have attended to worn suspension bushes and set up the alignment. And on the Motorways a GT will just eat up the miles, no sweat. Tech is a lot better too.

I can see why a Stradale would be in your thinking, but like the MC-Victory which should also be a contender, it is not manual. Both great cars though which tick lots of boxes. Porsche Cayman also springs to mind as a contender (R version with bucket seats).

How about a BMW Z4M Coupe? The last naturally-aspirated, MANUAL BMW 'M' car in a very interesting bodyshell with some nice parts bin stuff (CSL front brakes etc.). We currently have two for sale. This one in Interlagos Blue :

And also a 14K mile only car in Ruby Black with red leather, not yet advertised:

Good thinking John....like your thinking. Yes, I think MCV might be out as I might be able to overlook the manual element I'm not sure I could get over the values so much in excess of the 4200.

The Z4M looks good. Got any details to hand you can easily send over without breaking a sweat? Might wet my whistle. Might be too good for me as keen not to have another garage queen scenario though.

Maybe an option is to sell all as suggested but not immediately replace then use the TVR and two Pug GTi's more. Also still have the Alfa GT V6 as well so should really be driving all those more.

I just don't see the 4200 getting much use if it all as never goes out in the rain or the winter so takes out 3-4 months of the year already.
