I have been experimenting and trying to be open minded to try and get out of the 70-80's rut which is obviously the best era for music, and tried a number of random finds
Alison Cotton - Only darkness now. Utter tosh
Swans - Children of God / Feed good now. Dirge of the highest order
Passenger - Songs for the drunk and broken hearted - Melodic and rather good
Plastic Hearts - Miley Cyrus. Really quite a rocker now. enjoyed that
Still Corners - Last Exit. Forgettable
Cunning Folk - A casual Invocation. Complete tosh
Fiona Apple - Fetch the bold cutters. Liked that
PWR/UP - AC/DC - Thank god for something with a bit of oomph.
Jon Anderson - 1000 hands, Chapter one. Oh god no more chapters please.
Phoebe Bridges - Stranger in the Alps. Quite a find!

So pretty hit and miss, mostly miss

But I have also listeninng to albums and new stuff
Mark Knopfler, Paul Weller, Diana Krull, Krissie Hynde, Bruce Springsteen, whole oevre of AC/DC
Janice Ian
Peter Gabriel
Elton John
Genesis
The Waterboys
Manic Street Preachers
Arcade Fire
etc

You can't beat the the old stuff even if it's new stuff!

Being an un-reconstructed 80s throwback myself can I suggest

Christine and the Queens
John Grant (Specifically Pale Green Ghosts)
Gotye Making Mirrors
New Pretenders / Chrissy Hynde / Texas albums

Just a couple of slightly more modern stuff that I enjoy

Love Kate.....I had a box set of all the LP's ...Paid £30 for it and then was offered £200 for it a few years back.....Didn't love her that much to keep it..... ;-)
I bought them all as they were released. Up until about The Red Shoes. Tastes change and I'd from memory entered period of personality change, poor taste and mental suffering. Yes I'd gone 'Heavy Metal' and came out of it in at even worse state by going stadium-era (well, Manchester Apollo) Dire Straits. I didn't recover until discovering Green on Red, Jason and the Scorchers, Rain Parade and other American guitar bands at the various Manchester Internationals.

I'm ok now, proper grown up Dad now into guitar-based music and hating the rubbish my daughters listen to which has neither tune, rhythm nor musical ability........

I like pale green ghosts

You might like The future bites released yesterday , Steven Wilson has taken a turn in the road that has upset a lot of his fans but I really like it

The latest brilliant song from one my favourite band The Pretty Reckless. Not for everyone I'm sure. This is the third song off the new LP that comes out next Friday and I can't wait as everyone has been epic so far......Well for me it has.....
