Not sure I would want to drive a Caterham much on the road, an Elise has all the fun and just a tad bigger

I with Andy. I have driven a few and had one for two weeks one Summer. Lots of fun and the more powerful ones can be a handful in the bends but when I was looking for one I ended up with an Elise as it was just as much fun and I felt safer in it. a friend had one and he used the thing everyday ( he had always been a bit mad)...Remember being out in a light shower with him.,,we pulled ovet and put the roof on it, if you can call it that...20 mins later we were done but may as well left it off as it leaked like a sieve. They are still good fun on a sunny day though. Think if I wanted a car like this and get that sort of experience I would hunt down a used Atom.

Ewan,
you could buy a caterham 21, there's always one or two for sale. Widetrack chassis but in a party frock. "Normal " soft top, slightly heavier, 650kg. I may be biased as I've had mine 20 yrs now and it doesn't do many miles in the summer but it's a nice car.
Old auction list but gives you an idea

vhpd are rare, only about 5 I think. 200bhp from a k series.

Now there is a blast from the past. I wanted one so much when I saw it at the Motorshow many years ago. Aren't they still a tight fit inside ? Still have the original brochure for a 21. Can't believe you have one. Only ever seen one on the road ever. Respect to you and do you have any pictures of her....

Elise prices have firmed up recently so buy a good one and your fun won't cost you much when you come to sell on

Morgan and Atom both too expensive. And I’ve decided the Elise is too much like a normal car.

Off to try a Caterham today. The first hurdle is seeing if I fit in, and if so, can I then get out?!

Good luck, I’m sure you’ve read up, there’s quite a difference between the narrow and wide cars and the type of seat has a massive impact too.

Are you going to Williams?

I drove some Porsche(s) and a Caterham on track a while back - the Caterham was easily the most fun tbh.
Very tight pedal box; take some appropriate footwear....

It is quite a tight fit but actually it is very comfortable. You rather sit in it not on it. It's not that quick but mine is only a 1.6 supersport so only 140bhp. With 200/220 it would be superb. Its on the cards one day.
Getting in and out with the roof off is easy but the sill is very wide. Getting in and out with the roof on is an art and not easy.
I'm 6'2 and of normal build so it's not too bad with practice, but would be an entertainment in itself to watch for a larger novice!
Pics at home but mine is the red/maroon one in the 11th pic down

Your decision may have already been made @Ewan, but is a top down experience a prerequisite for this car?

I like the caterham thing, but hankered after a hotted up one. They are quite snug and I am a slim person but still had to delete shoes to drive it properly. That means wearing ****** boots so stops at coffee shops / bars invites sneering looks. The decent Caterfields were too expensive for me post-divorce. Needed something to replace convertible lost in previously mentioned transaction

Ended up with an MX5 which does the summer fun thing and can be battered around a Trackday without breaking. Cost me £1200 to buy + £60 for front pads and discs. Good luck!

******* boots = track driving footwear
