future classics?

Not for me. The whistling sound you hear when they pass isn’t the turbos, it’s their depreciation. Also, no dealer network over the channel, mixed with unreliability is a recipe for disaster. Also, to get rid of one, it needs a MacLaren warranty and that’ll cost from £6k per year to maintain. The problem with MacLaren is the fact they are bringing out a new model every 10 minutes and no one seems sure which one is best. The road testers say the 570S is the sweet spot but the 540 is the same car with only 30bhp less. Is the new 600LT better than the 675 LT? All great cars but potential financial suicide if you get a wrong un.

It’s such a shame, Ben, that you’re not wrong. The new 600LT Spider would be incredible to own. Or is the 650 better? Wait, though - the 650 Spider is now, oh, I dunno, £130k? If not it soon will be. Or was last week. And the 720? What a machine! See that ‘ring lap time? A beast! And plummeting in price as well.

Amazing cars, but however much loot you have sloshing round in your pocket it still smarts to sacrifice too much. And dammit, and the 12C Spider is aging so well.

I didn’t think I’d be saying this, but recently I’ve found myself looking at McLarens on PH (etc). A nice 540 can be had for around £100k. All of a sudden they are becoming tempting. As a summer weekend only car, doing limited mileage, surely they can’t tank in value. Can they?!

Mark one MX5 is a classic...and will continue to be the car that started a sports car resurgent. UK stepped away from this market and it was filled my Mazda with a brilliant little sports car. Classics for me are cars that had an inpact on a marque or a segmen in the market and was applauded for it. MX5 certainly did that.

Don't blame you. A great car.....looks and performance. I drove a 12C Spider and it blew me away. Handling and power were awesome and much fun had.

He’s on fire. Put down the Babycham mate!

Funny you should say that - as chance would have it, the family that made Babycham are friends of mine! They did very well out of it, as you can imagine. After that they made another killing with WKD. They still make cider amongst other drinks, and if you ever drive through Shepton Mallet in Somerset you’ll see their factories.

The Showerings? They used to own Kilver Court, which is now owned by the guy who runs Mulberry. If you ever get chance to pop in, the gardens are special.

An interesting read that Phil.

Glad I got my Golf GTI Phil back when I did, it's proved well so far. The Corrado will do well too.

I've been offered a Mondial cheap but a little wary it needs too much bodywork to make it viable.

Values quoted by "experts" and media always seem a bit low to me. Assume figures taken solely from auctions as actual prices achieved by dealers and private sales are unknown. Also, by the time the mags tip a model as "one to watch" they have already gone up by 50% or so.

The Corrado VR6 has been sought after for a while so I think you will do well with that Phil. I'd be more wary of taking on a Mondial; parts prices and still a bit unloved by the punters. It's time will come but maybe not this year for a leap in values.

Never mind all that stuff, these are definitely future classics!
