Hi

Having recently read the pistonheads article, i am now considering a 4200. I was close to buyig a gransport a few years ago but bought a m3 csl, which was great but with 4200 prices now getting close to 12k i still feel its a box i need to tick.

My question is this: in the comments of the pistonheads article a chap said that the friendly guys on the "sportsmaserati" forum said that many so called expensive parts i.e. f1 pump, brakes(discs and pads), oil filters, air filters, spark plugs etc can be sourced quite cheaply and many of them a shared with bmw's etc and that is a bit of a myth that the service parts are expensive.

Is this true and is there a thread with where to get these and approximate costs?
I think he called it an alternative List(with cheaper alternatives) you guys had produced i cannot find it on the forum.

I know the engines on the 4200 are very reliable and generaly very good as are the boxes.

Also if its true that the above parts can be sourced cheaply what about bushes/ droplinks etc.

Looking foward to hear whether this is all true as i may go out and get one bought!!

Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated

Is this true and is there a thread with where to get these and approximate costs?

I know the engines on the 4200 are very reliable and generaly very good as are the boxes.

Also if its true that the above parts can be sourced cheaply what about bushes/ droplinks etc.....refurbed bushes rather than whole new arm...£125 or so...tire rod £70

Looking foward to hear whether this is all true as i may go out and get one bought!!

Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated

PS Always get an indie inspection though of any prospective purchase!!!!

My advice is; do your research and do not buy on a whim. They are thoroughbred cars and, as such, can be financially punishing if you get a bad one. Be prepared to spend a lot, and if you don't, regard it as a bonus. Don't think you will be able to run one on Mondeo money, you may be able to for a time but the expense will catch up with you at some point. All the best in ticking the best box in motoring and any advice you need will available on here. Welcome and good luck.

mdss..A big welcome to the forum................I went from a 3200 to an M3 CSL...Great car the CSL.............Anyway..servicing is no where near as expensive as it was a few years ago......Part still are not cheap to be honest. You can use some Alfa parts I believe but never heard of BMW parts....Sure someone will come along and put this one right........There are some specialists that do reconditioned parts and breakers which can be cheaper.........Enigines are pretty much unburstable to be honest..........

Welcome to the forum. You said that there were comments below the thread on the PH buyer's guide, they don't appear on my browser, is that because I'm using Safari or because I don't log in to Pistonheads?

Shared BMW parts. The reversing sensor.
Shared Alfa parts. F1 pump, window winder mechanism
Shared Ferrari parts. 550 brakes 1/2 the price of Maserati ones

Welcome.

I think the relationship between BMW and Maserati is that they both use a lot of Bosch parts and I am pretty sure the gearboxes. The 3200 manual had the same Getrag box that was in the older M5 and I think there are some links with the CC and M3 SMG.

Blimey, I never knew that! Personally, I thinik the SMG is better than the CC for pottering around.

Dicky, they should be at the bottom of the page. Here's a link to Page 6 - http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassin...:+PH+buying+guide:+Maserati+3200+GT&mid=39609

I had to resist sticking my oar in to one of the posters who thinks he knows a lot more than he does! He was also on MF and came across pretty badly there too.

Just had the painful undertaking of reading the thread, noticed your points Woody, then you 'bit your tongue' and backed out. There are lots of folk on PH gassing who know exactly what they're talking about, sadly, plenty who don't. I've never professed to knowing the lot, but on here, if one of us get something wrong, then we are politely corrected. This forum really is the only place to discuss these cars. I've never felt personally that posting on PH ever achieves anything although I realise quite a few of us do so; just not for me.

To be honest Dicky, I was going to add something about the Rosso Mondiale GS Spyder, with a pic, but atcually thought "ah, borrocks to it....I'll probably get told I'm wrong, and I just cant be bothered".

Shame.

As you say though, on here it tends to be populated with people who will bow to the knowledge of those who know better. I know, I have to bow down almost everytime I contribute! LOL!

Your knowledge is far more than that Woody, we all come to you when it's a GS thing!

I've also just had the misfortune to waste my time reading the nonsense posted on PH. What a shame it's ruined a piece of PR about the brand and the car that brought Maserati back from the brink. I find PH a pointless place to post as it's full of 'experts' who know the sum total of feck all about anything and will argue to the death over facts which they are completely wrong about. As Dicky has said, we discuss the cars here and learn from each other.

Mostly.
