Whining 5th Gear Gsport

So the car has about 3 weeks left on the 3 year warranty.
I put it in for the 3 year service last week - at a mere 14K miles.
Ii comes out with no major issues. Then I am on the motorway last Monday and shift up to fifth gear.
As I pull through 4K rpm I hear this "turbo whine" as it accelerates. Oh - that's new I think to myself!
Only hear it in fifth gear acceleration? Any thoughts from those who know on the forum?
It went into dealer and today they confirm the noise is not my imagination! Nothing found in the gear oil (good news?)
Is this yet another "spiggot bearing" or any other thoughts?

Sorry can not help you with this one but sure some one will be along soon....Just wanted to say welcome to the forum as this is your first post. At least if it is an issue you have 3 weeks warranty left but hopefully it's just one of those Maserat things.

Yes, welcome Barbuckle.

I really dont know what that could be, but yes, it the spigot is a possibility, at least your get a new clutch out of it.

Not necessarily Matt.
When lancasters replaced the spigot on the S21YDR they intended to replace the old clutch back into the car but the Garage who were selling the car said" how about if we buy a new one and you put that in instead" and lancasters said well that would be exactly the same amount of work so yes that could be done for the same price.
so they bought a new clutch and ;lancasters fitted it in essence for free.
This means they would replace the spigot but unless advised would not replace the clutch.

I had a similar whine in second a couple of weeks ago and got a bit worried about it but when i asked maserati they said spigot and i said well the car was cold and u had to pull away up a steep hill.
they said "ah thats OK then it would do that in that situation" it has not done it again but then neither have I.

Could i ask does the whine exist when you drop into 5th or when you switch up to 5th?

Adam, thats what I meant, you pay the clutch, which is like £300 and they fit if for free.

From my experience the spiggot bearing doesn't whine , its more of a screech , and usually only in first and 2nd if pulling away extremely hard , even with an extremely worn spiggot you cant make it screech at hard accelleration in fifth , around Goodwood was a good test , there my car was put under hard accelleration in all gears and could only make it screech in 1st and 2nd, i would suggest looking somewhere else , there is another bearing on the same shaft cant remember its name , but they go sometimes aswell ,
Main thing is you have reported it within the warranty period ( even if its not fixed within this time ) Trident should cover it , worth a call to Maserati GB before hand to make sure they are aware of whats happening and what dealer is taking it on board , gearboxes are extremely expensive

I hope the following helps rather than confuses...
Note this is for a QP gearbox, but here are the only bearing references I can find:

Shaft Support bearing (marked 1):

Whine only audible whenever you engage fifth (up or down) and only under acceleration through 4K rpm (pretty specific I suppose - and worryingly that does point at the fifth cog?)

Dealer has advised Maserati - will keep the forum up to date on how this one develops.

If they have to drop gear box then I will look to renew clutch at same time (although only 37% worn!)

Any chance Barbuckle , that i could have your old clutch in the event you renew yours , i already have one and could do with another when i go up to AP racing , they will be attempting to do the kevlar facing and have asked for a couple of clutch plates to tryout , quite happy to pay postage or collect

When I know what is happening I will get back to you on this. Certainly wouldn't want to hand the clutch to the dealer!

Just to update the forum on this one.
After further road test the noise was also faintly audible in third and first. Maserati have determined that their preferred option is to fit a whole new gearbox (a snip at c. £8K for the part!)
How curious this failure emerged after a service which included gearbox oil change (did something else manage to get in there?)
If this had appeared a couple of weeks later, out of warranty - well perish the thought!

Oh yes Loz - sorry, but this means they will not be removing the clutch (not just yet!)

Having searched the various forums I note that quite a few gearboxes have been replaced. Is this considered "acceptable" for a quality marque? Or is it proof that the engineering standards at Maserati are truly second rate?

They do take a hammering, so its a bit of a tricky one. I certainly would not say Maserati engineering is second rate, they probably buy in the part from a supplier, and any that fail within warranty get sent back and thus have no cost to Maserati, other that the labour to fit.

I was going to sing the praise of Maserati after all this is a rare event...well just got hold of my cars previous service history after 2 years searching, and guess what.

06/05/2005, miles at 14,000 Investigate noise in 5th gear. Diagnose fault. Replace G'Box, 4.7 hours labour...total £6067.00...car was just 2 years old too!

Safrane - if you don't mind me asking, how many miles have you had out of the second gearbox (so far)?

hi guys,
i just had the same thing develop today and called mr lovetts privates and asked to speak to a tekkie.
He sugested that it sounded like air intake and maybe I look at the manifold pipes running across the front left (right as you have the hood up) for leaks or not quite sealed right and hey presto there was a largish misslignment from the service and i pushed it all back together again and noise has gone!
