How bizarre is that....I just was on the same add and about to post this one! Scary.

I was about to say nice car......but.....big money. Can't see that as over £8k more than the QP I just bought. Nice example but too much money.

Agreed - I think if you do 2007 QP its up there price wise and in strong dealer territory

Edit - Yep it is - in fact its a 1000 more than the sport that was at trent cars - and that only had 19000 miles.

As can be seen with the last two posted QP's, the prices are all over the shop, there's a £10k swing in some cases!

Is there an approximate age/mileage that the variators are known for going? Or is it simply pot luck?

I did a bit of research on this and although there are a few out-liers, trouble seems to begin at around 45000 miles quite often with coil trouble too. Not sure why this should be. My own case was before I owned it and at around 50000 miles.
My research was gathered from this forum, other maserati forums, my local indie and JCT600 Leeds, none of whom appeared to have an axe to grind. Pot luck is also valid, so this is only a guide. The answer appears to be to have a late engine number post 148697 I believe

Judging by the digging I've done, and I'll be the first to admit it's not an exact science, it seems to be circa 40-60k miles when it shows.

Do they all have this problem of this era? Do some get lucky or is it a case of not if but when?

It's the engine serial number that increase the likelihood of failure as has already been pointed out

Not a fan of the wooden interior trim but this one looks better than most and I think I could live with that!
Go and buy it
