XK8 Thoughts... I know I know, it's not a Maser

I have been watching the price of the XK8's slowly rise and then go bang and cars that you couldn't give away for £5-8K 18 months ago are not fetching near £15-20K and they are still rising.

Tempted to maybe make an investment and sit on it, anyone advise which models and what are the main Achilles heels of them?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Had 2 as daily drivers, one for 3 years from new, the other an ex-press car for 2 years after it was a year old. Mostly bulletproof except timing chain guides which were originally made from recycled cheese - ensure later metal ones are fitted, and early cars destroyed front wheel bearings until a revised suspension became available.

Engine and gearbox are strong, aircon based on Lexus and works, boot much larger than you might expect. Rear seats useless. XK8 pretty fast, needs better brake pads than standard, XKR very fast indeed.

I liked mine a lot.

Some of the early models look dated, especially with the wood interior. The new shape ones, especially the 5.0, are tremendous. Different proposition, but the XKR-S looks like a ton of fun.

Do you mean the XK or the XK8 , I couldn't find a xk8 that had made more than 6k on eBay

Early cars had the nikasil linings which wore away with the high sulphur fuel in the late 90s though if they're still running they should be OK by now

Darren have a look at the XK8 Convertibles, I'm looking at the classified prices as the auction prices are usually ended early.

I recommend asking the folk at xclusivelyjaguar. Letitia and Rob are fountains of Jaguar knowledge. They also happen to have two stunning QP's, including a very fine example of the V8 Evoluzione in RHD.

I had a 97 xk8 , ran like a Swiss watch in the 4 years I owned it until an abs light killed it and I fell out with it, cheap to fix as the major components are shared with the Xj8 and there's a million of those at the breakers

I'd go for a XKR as a long term investment

I am shocked the prices have gone up.

5+ years ago I looked at these but decides they were a bit "old man" for someone in their 20's! But then they were about £6-8k.

I can't see them as a great investment, simply because there's far too many of them. In the teens, a 3200 would be a better bet to my mind.

XKRs are great cars, stonking performance and the prices have gone up especially for good low mileage ones. As Ewan says they made a lot which is always a limit to investment potential but on the other hand good ones won't depreciate.

Only downside from me are they not based on an XJS platform same as the DB7? Not the greatest of all time

I wouldn't bother with an XK8, the XKR is the one to have.

Not much dearer and a lot more car. My father had a new XK8 in 1997 and it was a bit unrealiable. but not too bad. Most issues sorted now.

At the same time grandfather had a V8 XJR, the engine and (merc) gearbox are so much better.

I like the look of the early XKR's the most personally, but most say the later ones are better (Nikasil, Tensioners etc)

But by now the early ones have mostly been updated with later cam chanin tensioners, and nikasil is an old scare story...

Thanks Lads, yep will watch out for the XKR then.

Dem, I'm old, not a spring chicken any more and it wasn't about driving them but more of getting them as an investment.
