Waze Questions

A number of you recommended this app to me and I have started to use it to help me not get any more speeding fines, however I have a few questions: -

1. I can plan a route but it doesn't announce the turn directions, am I missing something as I have double checked that the voice announcements are on and indeed I get verbal warnings for cameras and traffic etc.?

2. When I receive a call in the car, it is a pain in the A$$ that it disables viewing directions and replaces it with the callers details, is there any way around that as I might be on a call for 30 mins and without any guidance it would be a waste of time.

3. Finally it doesn't half chew through the battery usage, do you all find that?@

Cheers for your thoughts.

It does eat the battery, I find turning the brightness down means it'll charge on the lead rather than drain

You should be getting turn directions, I use a bluetooth earpiece for calls and it delivers them through that but I can't remember if it works on a call

With apps in general if something isn't working deleting it and re installing usually sorts it out , make sure your phone is running the latest manufacturer updates

I think tapping the waze icon when you're on a call brings the screen back up but apparently even touching your phone when the engine is running can bring points
though yesterday I witnessed a guy speeding , holding a phone and jumping a red light , 3+3+6 = a ban , he was in a black range rover though so the drugs in the car would probably add a prison sentence on as well

Battery drain is a big issue with Waze but I don't have the other problems but phone calls are delivered through the Parrot

Yup. You don't even want to be touching your phone at all!!!! Even when you are stationary with the key in the ignition even with the engine off!!!

CONFIRMED by Essex Police:

**6 points and £200 fine for using a mobile whilst driving from 1st March 2017**

Advice to keep it simple:
- Keep your mobile in a craddle or glove box
- You cant touch the phone if its in a craddle, even if you stop at lights and even if your parked up with the engine on
- If you want to use the sat nav on a mobile or plug the charger in. You must set it up before keys are in the ignition and dont touch it once engine is on
- You cant scroll for tracks on your mobile while driving so have your playlist set up before entering the car
- If you work for Uber or alike, you cant touch the phone when the engine is on. So you cant accept work while your on the move
- Mobile can only be used if your parked up safely with engine off and keys out of ignition (Wireless keys - engine off)
- Death by dangerous driving is now life imprisonment, no longer 14 years
- You can use a mobile via built in-car technology like bluethooth. However, if you do have a collision, it can go against you.
- You cant use headphones
- You cant use loud speaker from your phone
- You cant move your phone while the engine is on
- If you call someone and they are driving, hang up
- If you are a passenger and the driver is using a phone, take it off them and tell them off
- If you are a employer and you force your staff to use a phone, It can result into imprisonment for you, large fines and your company being suspended from operation
- Rules apply to PDAs also

Note:
- 2.5 deaths a week due to a driver using a mobile phone
- No verbal warnings

Harsh but correct set of rules.

Can you touch a factory or 3rd party NAV but not a phone NAV?

You can touch/use hvac controls and wipers, elec seat controls and other buttons/functions in a car but can't touch your phone.

A Tesla has a 17inch screen you have to touch to operate most controls. This is one thing that seems inconsistent and too many anomalies exist that need to be sorted.

Being in the top 1% of Waze users nationally (apparently), I find the app so much better than TomTom except where there is only GPRS signal or none and Waze cannot get data... anyway the reason you are not getting voice directions is because it takes a moment for the voice command to activate the Bluetooth and it in turn misses it. If you are listening to music on your phone you will get voice commands over it no problem.

Any GPS will kill battery you can reduce refresh rate in settings for your device but it will make it jumpy.

It does seem anomalous that you can fiddle with inbuilt car sat nav, CD player, etc, not to mention heating controls etc, but not touch your phone. But there does seem to be something different about a phone - I think if you are choosing a CD in your car system it is a momentarily distracting, but you are still primarily focused on driving, but if you are flipping tracks on Spotify on your phone, it risks becoming a major distraction, taking all your attention, as you are normally used to being fully immersed in your phone.

Also, much of the data says that it is the phone conversation that is most dangerous, not just pushing the buttons. So really all phone use while driving should be banned, but apparently that is seen as a step too far, unenforceable, or needing a technology solution.

I do use Google maps in the car, mainly because it is excellent at the live updates and best routes due to traffic/avoiding accidents.
What does Waze offer over Google maps?

You're not supposed to fiddle with the in car SatNav whilst you're driving. At least that's what the warning screens usually say. I don't know anyone who doesn't though.

I still use the in car SatNav for now. It has traffic updates and does suggest alternate routes. The issue I have with it is that the road data is at least 4 years out of date, based on the speed limit on the road into the village, and unlikely to see an update now they've changed to a new system.

I've thought about using Waze but don't want to stick anything on the inside of the screen. Well other than the GoPro

Thanks Lads, just deleted and re-installing to see if that will fix it.

I use the Maser handfree system in the car so don't have to touch the phone.

Currently using my Garmin for directions but wanted to use Waze for the future as I think it will be quicker and more accurate.

I love Waze. A couple of tips to reduce your data usage - switch to 2D maps so it downloads less tiles and if you plan the route when connected to WiFi it will download all the data it needs and keep it in memory as long as the app is open.

Waze is user supported in that if a copper is sitting at the side of the road waiting and a wazer has already passed chances are you'll know he's waiting , I was in my van on the A55 , I knew about the copper hiding at the top of the on slip road and the camera van on the bridge a mile further up way before I got there

Traffic is accurate and up to date as it's reported live by other wazers

I've got a £200 tomtom that's been in the box for months

Trouble is every wazer is now breaking the law in touching their phone.....
What we need is reliable voice commands to operate sat navs or phone. I think phones more modern than mine can be switched to always listening rather than having to touch them to wake them up, but that would mean the NSA being able to listen to the lovely sound of my exhaust.... (and the battery draining even faster I expect!)

If this is correct is it also illegal to use your touchscreen info / in built car sat nav systems??

Thanks for all your advice lads, the voice activation worked on the way down to the ace last week.

I'm still concerned about losing directions when a call comes through as I can get a good number of calls when travelling but need the visual at a minimum when on the phone, I know that I can enable voice commands when on the phone, but that is not enough, does anyone know a way around it?

I think that this has always been the case. From my manual:
Do not input destinations, changesettings, or access any functions requiring prolonged use of the Navigation System controls while driving. Pull over in a safe and legal manner before attempting such operations.
