Thread Drift

Part of the charm of being on here is going off on tangents and perhaps eventually coming back on topic.
However there are times when some may take offence or it may not be appropriate.
I was on a forum in the past which was very similar in nature to be on here. Lot of leg pulling and good natured abuse.
However there were complaints from time to time about thread drift especially concerning sale of vehicles or parts owned by forum members.
The forum owner decided to apply a "rule" that if someone started a thread and didn't want it going off topic, they would state on the thread title they were invoking his rule. Breach of that rule and the OP would ask a mod to remove any posts not specifically relating to that item.
Would that work here?

So for instance you put your car up for sale and you head it something like "Invoking Conaero's rule" to make it clear it remains on topic.
Any breaches and OP has right to ask for it to be removed.

One of the few complaints about this was sometimes the thread just died very quickly as no one was posting on it even if it was about shoes!

Thoughts?

There was a thread somewhere around these here parts which drifted towards the topic of shoes. And what a broad variety of different shoes were covered.

Knew attempt at a sensible post was probably pointless on a Friday night. However tomorrow is curry night. ;-)

The only time I saw what I thought to be overstepping the mark was the run up to Eu Referendum vote and that was quickly stamped out by mutual agreement.
I think if we all start from the premise that we are just having a bit of fun sometimes then it is fine. After all we cannot all agree on everything and if we did the Forum fails. So
I say leave it as it is. I love the thread drift and the fish puns some of which are truly awful. But I do understand your point

Thread drift is one of the great things about this forum. I wouldn't be in favour of limiting it in any way.

This forum would spontaneously combust if it didn't have at least two or three members taking it off topic within the first page!

Top stuff!

To be vaguely serious, I've only seen a few cases where the OP has called time on drift, and everyone seems to have respected that. OTOH if you want a serious environment to sell stuff, probably better go somewhere else :)

We know return you to your scheduled punfest

It's one of the great joys of this forum. Sometimes it takes a long time to work out where the thread started and went but that's part of the fun.
