Hi guys, an interesting day so far. I was told that the penninsular wouldn't be open until at least 3pm, if at all, so I took a gamble and went over at 09.45. As I left the ferry I cut into the middle of a 7 car convoy which were all Turkish registered. Guess what? Loads of manned checkpoints but they were allowing Turks through and if they realised a Brit was in the middle, it was too late, I was gone. So, despite the efforts of the aforementioned (but since deleted) parties I was on V beach by 10.15. When I got down to the beaches, the crowds were non-existent thereby confirming my previously aired theory.
V Beach where the 'River Clyde' was beached and 6 VCs were won in the action there.
W Beach where the Lancashire Fusiliers 'won 6 VCs before breakfast'. The wreck on the beach is from 1915 (the boat, not the car!).
Been there, done that and got the T-shirt.
I'll 'do' Anzac and Suvla bay tomorrow as I'm going to try and take some photos for (Ferrari) Frank. Lots of off-roading in prospect but not if it's been raining. So, all in all, a mixed day. I couldn't be there for sunrise but I did get there 'on the day' which means a lot. I even bumped into the son of one of the chaps who made it ashore with the Munsters at the landing on V Beach. Apparently, he survived the war with a Military medal and bar despite being badly wounded twice.
