strange clicking noise from the back of 4200

The 4200 does not have the actuators that sit on top like the 3200 which are prone to breaking, the actuation is done all inside the shock, the wire goes straight inside the shock.

Think David Askew can rebuild them though from memory.

Your suspension error light might have been caused by it being up on the ramp, it may not come back again.

Not sure if David can, but there's someone on ebay that sells them

Oh and here's a curve ball for you! I am working on a 3200 at the moment and getting it back to full fitness as it failed MOT on rear shocks and few other things, ordered the shocks and the were wrong! Turns out this car was a very rare beast as it didn't have the self adjusting suspension (ferrari actuators) and it needed a shock without the little gear on top! There is no SPORT or PWR button on the centre console and I've since found out it must be one of a few cars in the UK which didn't have the "skyhook" (it's not skyhook this was on the 4200) adjusting suspension. MENTAL!!!!!!

So there is proof that there are cars out there without a SPORT button and trick suspension.

Would the shock mounted actuator make a nise if it was failing ?

It should do as far as i know. Like a cog turning / slipping with chewed teeth or trying to turn against a seized cog type noise. I would think the screwdriver trick to listen to them will still work on the 4200 even though its under the top cover.

I believe the function of the 4200 type dampers is via a solenoid valve. It opens another path for the damper fluid in the piston to soften the ride and closes it to make it firmer.

PPCP rebuild the dampers I believe but a solenoid valve would not make a grinding noise in my view, as it uses an electro-magnetic coil to move the valve piston a couple of mm at most...

This is my understanding as well

There is an amount of "clicking" then the clattering noise . Could it be the relay having a paddy then making the valve open and close rapidly for a prolonged amount of time ? Usually about 2 to 3 seconds .

Failing that , what else could it be ?

I'd be surprised if the solenoid was audible, but I've never listened to my dampers before. If you have long arms you could unplug it, it would throw a light but the noise would stop. The cable is held in place with a cable tie which you have to release from the retainer then you can pull the cable out far enough to unplug it.

You could do the same with the fuel pump (or pull the relay), there would be enough in the lines to run for a minute.

Also disconnect the wiring to the fuel cap release too.

The carbon canister is square and is situated in the left hand side of the boot . It must be the top of the shock
