Stolen!!!

My dad had his Esprit stolen with keys a few years ago. It was found a few miles away parked in a local village, reported by a local neighbour who was annoyed it was parked in the front of her house, even though on the public road.
Apparently quite normal, nick it, leave it somewhere on the road for a few days incase it is found by a hidden tracker. If it is not found within the week chance no tracker so they come back for it.

My parents home got burgled a few years back and they made it off with 2 sets of keys, one for a Honda Civic my parents bought almost new (1 year old) and one for Audi A2 (my sisters).
They, for some reason never took the cars......parents woke up went downstairs and couldn't find their keys not could my sister so they can go to work.....

No signs of break in so just a normal panic that they have misplaced keys going on, until.......they spot someone approaching the drive and opening the Hondas door, they ran out and scared them away and his friend was trying to take the Audi.
They ran off without the cars so new keys needed cutting.......

Why bother??

you have keys from the night why not take them?
Weird these types.....anyway hopefully your car is 5 metres down the road and unmolested

No I took the tracker out when it killed the battery 5 years ago so I know it does not have one...

Door locks changed on the house, Jeanette's insurers and lease company are happy to action a claim immediately and have arranged a loaner from Enterprise, she is on her way home in now. Key insurance (£10 for £1,000 cover) will action replacements as soon as I have a crime No. Hiscox want to wait a month before they action the claim and no loaner :( If however it is found and needs repairs I will get a loaner! Go figure???

No other news at this time.

P.S. Thanks for the many shares on FB folks.

I thought Hiscox TV adverts are all about no quibble insurance, BS by the sound of it!

Newton, sorry to hear your news, crucially everyone in the house was unharmed though must be quite a shock to say the least. My 3200 came fitted with a tracker and I paid £200 a few years ago to have a lifetime activation with it, you can have them serviced every few years for around £100 (in my case)

I'm starting to think that something like this device would be a good purchase for our cars :-

http://www.emanualonline.com/Parts/...Tracker.html?gclid=CNq5rqnu3swCFSQW0wodBKQBdw

Small cost easily hidden and only needs charging every 2 to 3 weeks and no dreaded battery drain like the navtrack. you could possibly even wire it to the cig lighter in the car so that it charges when the ignition is on. No comfort to you Newton but hopefully your will come back soon and may be an option for you.

I like that, do I need to keep the sim card topped up?

just get a pay as you go sim and leave an old iPhone hidden in the car with 'Find my iPhone' enabled. Suppose its easy to point these things out now its too late though. You could wire it into the 12v system so its always charged. You can get an iPhone 3 for £20

Smartphones are quite crappy at getting an accurate location when they are near the windshield, imagine how they will be hidden where they almost for sure will have near zero GPS coverage.
The ideal is a small GPS module with inertia navigation that will continue to track position in the absence of GPS signal, by calculating the delta between the last known GPS coordinates and the calculations from an accelerometer.

Some car satnavs already have this system.
I had a Peugeout 307 with satnav that worked while in the underground car park, all the way to -3 floor.

I've always left my door keys in the front door on a half turn, that way you can't pick the lock without turning the key from the inside.

I know hindsight is wonderful in cases such as these but it might be worth remembering for the future.
