Pop over to spain adam andy will do it for you.....

No seriously, all the best.....
They do suffer from head gaskets so look into that.....

gasket is fine, well i think so anyway, it is not burning its own oil nor is there any oil/fluid seeping from the head.

Cause of the problem was failed driveshaft oil seals, £150 for new seals, labour, VAT and fresh gearbox oil.

Adam, did you buy privately or from a dealer? If from a dealer it's likely you will have some comeback against the vendor re goods of merchantable quality.

Head gaskets go if you drive in wrong gear dont they?

The Punto can easily take 4th at 30mph without any vibrations or unwanted noises coming from the 'box or engine.

Heads can fail if you thrash from cold starts and you can also destroy the piston rings and bores of the engine block.

Head bolts need to be 60nm. They tend to be 55nm.
And head gaskets go, due to pressure, caused by heat. Radiator can silt up, and the whole coolant system, is a bit delicate. I would clean the Ally rad out, and back pressure the coolant system.

On the E36, the coolant bottle, which is built into the radiator, leaks after a time, causing coolant loss, and consequent head gasket blow.

A bit confused guys head gaskets going from driving to slow and hitting the redline not going to happen.
Have never blown one on my cars me and Benny D could be buggered but i don't think so.
I do a regular mobile decoke for customers who eco drive choke the cars to death.
Regular coolant changes are important especially when you have ally heads on cast iron blocks and not having the right coolant in them.
BMW's used to suffer with cracked heads i know as i have done quite a few.
Head gaskets can detiorate through being laid up and then blow when people use the car.

Phill is that what is more commonly refered to as a 'road service'? Have often performed that on choked up motors and the improvement is incredible - about an hour of thrashing then round the lanes; the best result I ever got was on a mini silver 25 celebration - before road service it couldn't get over 40 seriously! They were a 1275gt as well....

Newton,
I use Forte engine treatments and have found that putting fuel conditioner in the tank and giving it a good thrash can cure many faults.
If i had a pound for everyone who said what have you done to my car as its so much better.
Phil.
