Sorry to hear about your gearbox.

A low mileage secondhand box from a reputable source must be the cheapest way to go but you will still have the labour of removal and fitting

That's crappy news Greg.

I'd also be very tempted to try flushing out the old fluid and replacing prior to doing any major surgery, for all that would cost to try. Otherwise, 2nd hand box from someone like pccp sounds like a decent option.

On the basis of Phil's reputation I would have thought that he would have tried replacing the seal and doing a flush and refill.
Either way the box has to come out.
The color of what oil was left would tell the story.
I know my 456 had a new autobox in her done by Marinello a year before I bought her that cost the previous owner 13,000 pounds the invoice was in the history file.
When I bought her I knew I couldn't afford her just needed to tick V12 Ferrari off the list before 50 as I left school with 3 CSE certificates and 1 O level that was a D.
Still my Automotive qualifications have taken me around the world and worked in some amazing places from Toyota Motorsports in Germany and Aston Martin in the UK.
Hope it all works out Greg.

I trust Phil at PK, he truly loves the marque and particularly knows these old girls inside out so if he says oil is black and parts seem fried, then that is the way it is. The more I research though the more it seems likely I won't be able to afford a refurb since I only have so much left in the war chest this year, but it does no harm to get a quote since the box is out anyway. At least then I can make a decision based on full facts with full knowledge.

You could always stick the sh box in as a stop gap, have yours refurbished and fitted, then sell the other to recoup some costs, that way Marci will still end up with your preferred option.

You might be presently suprised Greg, as those Aussie slush boxes are nornally bulletproof, trust you to break something that unbreakable ;)

Dave

The 3200's automatic transmission was manufactured by BTR in Albury, New South Wales, Australia. Such transmissions are very very cheap to buy used and are also cheap to recondition. The BTR transmissions ordered by Maserati and used in the 3200 was the very same transmission fitted to Ford Falcon taxi cabs. The only modification to the BTR taxi cab transmission was the fitment of heavy duty bands to cope with the torque produced by the 3200.

The photograph below is of my 2002 Ford Tickford T3 TE50 5.6 (250KW/550Nm). It too is fitted with the same specification BTR automatic transmission as the 3200.

Cheers, Ron

Out of interest, does the manual box come from the same manufacturer?

No the manual box is a getrag which is also fitted to the BMW M5 (E59) and is pretty much bullet proof. It's notchy when cold but once warm and mastered it is a joy. The Manual 4200 is horrid in comparison.

Cheers Rex, that is useful to know.

Spoke to my friend and his autobox rebuild cost just over £2k back in 2013. The company that done the work was in Horsham in Sussex so a long way from you , but if you want the address and phone number I can pm details to you.

Regards

My 3200 and 4200 were both manual and whilst I appreciate the limitations of the manual design in the 4200 I found it easy to live with and it did not have the missing 2nd gear that the 3200 had when cold.

In the past I have posted that my 3200 manual box is notchy and I avoid second for the first mile. Following a contactless throttle body rebuild from Mike Roberts the box is now easy to use, even when cold. The traction control is also a lot less intrusive. Oh, the joys of fine throttle control.
