Ok, not a simple fix it seems. Front seal went and lose of oil has fried the gearbox. Phil has sent it away for a quote but anyone an idea what a gearbox rebuild may cost?

Oh no, not had much luck re Marcis gearbox. I suppose on the plus side there are quite a few 3200s being broken, S/H box may be an option.

You might be presently suprised Greg, as those Aussie slush boxes are nornally bulletproof, trust you to break something that unbreakable ;)

I was going to say the same thing - no doubt there are a couple around with the usual suspects; David Askew, Greg in Ireland.

Good luck and I hope that it gets sorted soon

Saw Fiona in Tesco and hoped from what she said it was minor. Really sorry to hear that.
There is/was a guy in Edinburgh area who rebuilds auto gearboxes and I got a quote from him for the van box a couple of years ago.
He has a great reputation and used by a lot of the specialists in Scotland. Will be able to get his number if you want assuming he is still doing it.
I actually spoke to his wife and she does all the ordering of bits and she knows everything there is to know about every auto box ever made. From memory she lived in Fearn area before she moved south!

Will get the quote for refurb before considering 2nd hand since you never know with 2nd hand but a refurb, if I can afford it, should be good as new when done. PITA though, we are away most of September so I can see August slipping by waiting for job getting done therefore a short summer this year maybe :(

Not sure who is picking the box up from Phil but may be the same people.

I was also told because of loss of oil the plates would be wrecked due to slipping and overhearing. However the guys wife said to simply flush out the box with special fluid and then refill and see what happens. Did that and 10k miles later still running perfectly.
From memory quote was under £2k. You will see people advertising they will do it for less than a grand but quality of work varies from poor to rubbish.
If you didn't run the box dry you might be ok.

These guys were in Edinburgh suburbs. As far as I know they are the only ones anywhere close that do it. There were 2 in Glasgow area but after that it was South.

hi Greg, thats bad, had similar issue were my gearbox failed. the cost of new was over £10k, refurb quality of work was a concern so opt for second hand. lucky we found one in italy with almost no miles but still cost alot. this way i knew its all original parts. with a refurb i would be surprised if they can get original gears but im sure most these parts will be same as others.
if you can get an indy to check around with their contacts in euro or look for a low milage car thats been well maintained and you should be ok

within your costs i would also suggest clutch and a few visit to indy to get the gearbox checked / oil replaced. i did this more for peace of mind to make sure all was ok. way over kill but i had the gearbox checked/ oil replace 3 times in 18mouths. gearbox is now checked every service and oil replaced every 2yrs.

maybe as suggested a good flush and oil replaced maybe just all you need

goodluck and hope you get it fixed.

Is remaining auto box oil black to indicate burnt clutches?

If still red then might be ok, I would perform and oil and filter change on the box and try again. Is access easy for a diy job?

Must have been a sudden massive leak to go unnoticed and loose most oil?

Yup, I stopped for a picture in front of a hump back bridge about a mile from the village and no smoke or oil spots, half a mile later I notice smoke in the mirror so my guess is also a massive leak rather than gradual.
When Phil gets the quote for refurb if it is too rich for me, already had a 3 grand service bill this year and going on safari in September so the war chest is pretty close to bare this summer (and still to get a 10th anniversary pressie or my nuts will be toasted!) I'll speak to him about searching out a 2nd hand autobox.

Friend of mine had his rebuilt a few years ago , will see if I can find out what he paid, seem to recall £1k but it probably depends on what they find when stripped down. pccp have a low 30k miles box for £900 that could work out the cheapest solution .
Best of luck
