Well said, Pete. I remember Dem checking out a seemingly overpriced GS (MCV?) for me at a non-specialist garage. We had no idea of what checks had been run on the car, yet the guy wouldn't budge on his high price. With a dealer or an indie, you can be reasonably sure that they will have run the SD2/3 over it, checked the clutch wear, etc.

When I sold my 3200, the indie I sold through found some mechanical problems I was unaware of, and corrected them before reselling. That is how it should be. I'll bet there are a few garages out there who would just give a car a cursory look-over, buff it up, attach some 3rd party warranty, and then tell everyone what a perfect example the car is, etc. Call me a cynic ...

I remember.....the day i heard i was to be a dad.....

Car not great, seller not good....had to walk

Good cars, whatever the marque will always sell...

Nice low miles old school Maser's are getting rare, there's people out there willing to pay the asking price!

I looked at a car at lotus newcastle last year - on the surface it looked OK, so I had an independent inspection done. The results showed the car to be a dog. Exactly as you have described MS - the dealer was just peddling a car that I think had come through the trade network - independent specialists such as Dicky Grace wouldn't have touched it. I sometimes wonder where it is now. Somebody must have bought it. It was up for top money as well.

£250 saves you all that grief.......if only more did it and not only saved weeks of fixing but also stops destroying your view of the car/marque

Maybe, if a member has a inspection done on a car that they publish it on here if they decide not to complete?...We could build up quite a data base on the car...happy to do that with my first 4200, but it would be just listing all that was done and items that were earmarked for attention in the near future.

Given this car is now up for sale it could inform a prospective purchaser of the cars history and arm them with a list of questions and ask..."Well has it had the spigot bearing done?...Serviced in the last 5k !...but that was 3 years ago"

Think that's a good idea. There's a sticky started by Dicky Grace around this subject.

The inspection I had done highlighted body repairs down drivers side and boot. The inspector wouldn't test drive it tip the dealer had topped up the brake and power steering fluids which he said were almost dry...

I'm happy to add details of the car if this idea takes off.

Ok moderator s...can we do this? Would only want replies to each post to be factual or it would loose focus far to quickly.

I'd say that's a great idea but only if the opinions were those of Maserati specialists and main dealers, not the opinions of private purchasers.

I agree, private purchasers would be far too emotive and base their conclusions partly on their expectations rather than realistic expectations given year, mileage and price.

Private opinions are beneficial also. Both the GranSports I owned ran faultlessly during my stewardship. The 3200 was a little more problematic, with the CEL light coming on rather too regularly for comfort. That is surely useful information for any prospective buyers?

As someone new here I was really impressed by how much knowledge was actually held by members on individual cars available out there, that said though, a reference dossier on "reported" cars would be invaluable to anyone searching for more in depth info than what is in an advert on PH or AT. However, I might be wrong here but do you not need permission of the author rather than the owner of a report to make it public?

Who's read the forum Ts+Cs? ;)

The other slight issue may be the impact on the *seller*.....

lol........I'm an admin on another forum so guessing the T&C the same on all ;)

have to say, less worried on that score - the responsible seller would readjust his expectation on a sale post getting info on probs with a car..........the irresponsible ones.....are they not the ones we need to know about!:firing10:

Would it be kept up to date ? Although it sounds good. I believe a "does anyone know this car" could be more rrlevant.

Maybe we could simply keep a register of the cars we have owned? For instance:

Maser Sod - GranSport - Grigio Palladio - YB06WME

Any prospective buyers could then look through the register - if they see the car they are chasing on the list, then all they have to do is PM the ex-owner for information on how the car was during the period of ownership.

Perhaps not everyone wants to give out their details but I'm sure there are plenty of us who would.

That would work. You could have a dedicated page with exactly that info on then the subsequent condition report would be confidential to a point thereby not publicly undermining any potential sale.

We could start the thread and call it POs (previous owners) or something. No comment but just as you say;
Car......
Reg.......
PO.........
Sold.....
Great idea

Yes it would be out of date but you would only need to check the service history to see if the identified issues remained un resolved
so;

WM03FZD - Sebring Blue CC
Last inspected by emblem March 2011 at 70k ( Major)
clutch 69% worn
Slight play in steering rose joint OS monitor
Slight weep on OS cam cover

currently for sale @75k for £11,750 with new private reg
vendor states new clutch
serviced 5k ago but not since 2011

so the service history is now shot as its three years overdue
clutch has been done but check spigot bearing was done and flywheel
check steering and cam covers
