Had something similar on my SMG M5 not going into certain gears and they replaced the valve block at £4k!!!! Hope it's a fluid or relay thing on yours mate...

Try the re set but use ice mode when you start as that, by missing first, may give pressure to get into third.

S - I can cycle through first & second with/without the engine running.

No reverse at all ....

Catman - master reset is making no difference :-(

P - you got me excited about the fluid levels (although it only came back from DL in April!) but don't think my hydraulic reservoir is where my book says - guessing it's the top yellow one in the pic? If so, check, all hunky dory ...... although coolant (beige bottle, black cap) seems a little low (no indicator what is max fill?! by the by)

Mine had similar issues once, it turned out to need re-calibration of the gearbox. In that case, there was no G/B light on the dash, just wouldn't go into reverse or above 2nd gear..

Hopefully yours is the same as it's a no-spares-needed fix. You'll need a MD or indie with an SD system to diagnose and re-calibrate.

Sorry the yellow one is just power steering.
F1 pump reservoir is under the car by the rear transaxle.

Pretty sure this is nothing to do with pressure or level. There's no need for higher pressure to get higher gears.
I think an SD is required for this one :(

C - do you think anything will show on SD even if there's no EM light on the dash? No expert, and nor was The AA geezer, but he said there was little point in hooking up the diagnostic if there were no indications on the dash?

Pete - do you think it's worth checking the fluid? Any more description of how to find it?!

Chris - that sounds exactly what has happened to mine! The pump priming happens exactly as described by Benny & Conaero - I'll see what I can see in the fuses.

Matt - am I right in thinking the relay is in the boot by the battery?!

SF

Yes, you have to do a bit of a Vet calving routing but its up above the battery and I thing there are 2 side by side.

Put your hand up on them and get someone to turn the ignition to start and you should feel it.

Agree, your issues do not sound pump, clutch or pressure related, gearbox recalibration is where I would start, but dealer SD only I am afraid.

It may be the clutch position sensor, or some other sensor/electrical gremlin.

Snowflakes: *Absolutely*

I must confess it would be nice to drive a car which the AA man knows more about than I do. It's not happened yet, though :)

The SD can definitely pick things up when there aren't any lights, the lights tend to have a specific set of criteria to make them come on (though the CEL does cover a lot, it seems) but they don't cover everything that can go wrong. When I had the first issue (could only select 1 & 2) there was no dash light that I remember. In that case, it went back to Giallo who had worked on it before I bought it and they re-calibrated using the SD.

So DL have diagnosed it as an actuator problem with a replacement bill of a smidge under £4k which ain't all that palatable! Diagnostics cycle through all gears virtually, nothing else on SD, and everything else looking ok but I think its entirely unacceptable for an actuator to last just 30k miles at such a massive replacement price! I pay these sorts or prices for actuators on my gas turbine engines! Come on Ferrari/Maserati (fiat) stop taking advantage!

To be fair to DL though, Richard has been good re: price but @ £2600+vat+7% mark up (reduced from 10%) and after a £3500 clutch & major service bill in April I'm struggling to grow the kahunas to pass this bill through the wife ;-)

Any suggestions saving the pennies welcome (with only first & second I haven't really got the option to take it anywhere else) & I'm gonna see if they'll mind me asking eurospares to send one direct (still £2400 inc vat!)
